A quiet ride in the car
after the kites were back in the trunk,
all buckled in and ready to go on home
Suddenly the decibels rose
to fever pitch, little girl pitch
a tiny little caterpillar had hitched a ride
from its perch in the grass in the park
we quickly pulled over, emptied
the poor creature from the car
Settled back in
readying to go on home
until more screams of terror
caused this time by a Little Green Beetle
sitting on the upholstery
of the car seat.
Oh to have country girls
at moments like these

Disciplinarian
The law was the disciplinarian.
So I guess I understand more fully
the phrase, “throw the book at them”
Yes, it was the gate through which they walked
the means to an end that didn’t lead to the pit
but it was flawed, because we are human
we needed love, we needed saving grace
waiting for us when we asked for the indwelling
the living God to come into our spirits
to live in us, emblazoned on our hearts
permeating our souls, sustaining us
day by day in the face of challenges, temptations
which we could not resist alone
(or the prisons would be empty, the police released
from their vigil in the streets at night)
oh we needed the law to keep chaos at bay
But we needed His grace, His sacrifice
to save any one of us

Clothed with Christ
We that have been saved
are clothed with Christ
coated by the example of the risen Lord,
who humbled himself
while here on earth
who walked in sandals
on the dusty roads,
who was without a home,
a migrant preacher
out in the wilderness
Clothed with his worker’s hands
to do the work he left
for us to complete,
to do greater than he
through the sands of time
until the new creation
each of us is destined to be

A Call to Testify
(not to follow)
Oh how he wanted to
to become like the twelve
followers of the Son
to walk with Him;
but that was not to be his role,
not part of the plan for him.
He was to stay in the city
and proclaim the good news
of his healing by the Son.

Choosing Death
Demons released
from his body,
chose death,
drowning in the sea
over returning

In death a gift, an act

The Lord’s Exclamation Point
Let Anyone who has ears [to hear] listen!
He said is more than once,
to try to get it into,
firmly rooted into,
our thick skulls,
That his lessons were there
available to all,
to all who had
ears to hear with.
But the harder part,
the salient part
The central issue,
where the law failed
remained, and does
yet even today
That is why the passages
all end with an exclamation point
Because we have the availability
We can be saved.
But to reap that harvest
We must listen,
not merely hear.

I Has Gained Everything
Before you came along, I was sure
oh so sure, that I was in control
that I could change the world
That the world was watching me
that I could be all there was to be
But without your love
I was the clanging gong
off key and alone
With your love, I can move mountains
I can fly, in your arms, reach my dreams
sail to uncharted shores
find my way through the challenges of life
because you are there, with me
I thank the Lord for this day
when we can become one, husband and wife
share our love with our families, our friends
Are you watching dad? I hope you’re happy too
Because she is with me, you know I’m safe
To you I need to say, that though I have traveled
and run many miles,
it is with you that I find my way
with you by my side that
I can run the race of my life
with you I can be sure of my footsteps,
that I won’t be lost
with you in my life
and in my heart,
I have gained everything

Spin Practice
Like twin party favors
blown out and back in
they furled and unfurled
and their skirts swirled
from next to one another
to full extension
there in the living room
this morning
Reaching their zenith
when momma
hummed the theme to
The Flintstones.
Readying themselves
for Dancing with the Stars.
Two dance partners
during spin practice,
giggling and crashing
into furniture

Calm in the Midst of the Stormy Night
Settling for a few moments
sittings still in the midst
of the stormy night
lightening and thunder
held at bay
for a few blissful minutes
quieting the day,
slowing down a bit more
feeling the peace
Your heavenly peace
in the words shared
our few moments
together, quiet
in the midst
of storm

A Christian Lament
A pastor asked me
to think about, write about
ponder the decision
the change in course
inexorably to the edge of the pit
staring down into the abyss
down to Sheol
when we thought torture
was the right response
to terror
A rush of poems met the charge
and this one too, a few days down
struggling to understand the enormity
the irreconcilable change
in our nation’s place
in the world, for that fateful turn
Oh that we could put this genie back
into the bottle, to reverse time
and undo those moments of madness
recklessness, to put the lid back
onto Pandora’s Box,
to put the apple back on the tree
But we cannot now
no more than
those actors
while they
were on the stage
May history judge us more kindly
than these

Jacob, I Understand
A fall on the ice, two plus year ago
a concave spot, in my left hip,
where it once was convex,
a reminder of that fateful fall
at the back of the parking lot
lost my balance, my way to the door
fumbling with keys, papers,
the clutter of life, changing our focus
So, I understand Jacob, the pain in the hip
the constancy of the discomfort,
changing you, your path in life,
your name, for you struggled,
wrestled with God,
out there in the desert place
knocked you off your own path
turning once more toward the creator
reborn Israel, with the sore left hip
moving on in life,
with a reminder, like me
of a fateful struggle
the impact of reality
on our sore bones

released in the telling,

Single-Minded
The urgency of His work
reflected in the word of the call
the response to the hesitance
the excuses of the followers
unready for the demands,
the single-minded commitment
the important work
of the living God
to save the whole world
while he lived
and all the days since his rising

What Are You Looking For?
The words of God, the Son,
at the beginning, the start
of his earthly ministry
After the baptism, near the Jordan.
Disciples of the first to proclaim
the coming of the kingdom,
read to lead and to follow;
but only after the fateful question
to remove false expectations
to understand the way of this Messiah
the journey of His ministry
the way that would lead to the cross

The Least Among You
Jesus tells the unvarnished,
uncomfortable, awkward truth
in a small article of faith
Turning the world’s order
upside down; applying God’s
judgment to the acts of man
That the servant of all
is the greatest of all.

Nowhere to Lay His Head
A homeless prophet
in mission to his people,
to a broken world.
Offering no comfort
to those who would join him
Be his followers, disciples
A call to be focused, resolute,
to immediately leave all
become nomads,
missionaries to a people
too sure of their salvation,
a legion of a people
who are like Job
before the testing.
Those who would not
understand, who could not
follow. Safe in their
beds; destined for Sheol.

A Greater Debt
An essential lesson was lost
by the Pharisee that day
Yes she had a greater debt,
and poured out her love
in full measure;
But he too was a debtor,
he too owed much
under the law
lost a chance at grace
by a false hope –
being justified under the law

Not Who We Are
I listen with disbelief
at the grim facts
our government’s choices
to abandon justice
for a false belief in security
from our acts of torture,
of hidden prisons,
and nameless captive
We no longer can claim
this is not who we are.

Self-Defeated
By committing acts of terror,
by violating due process rights
of those accused, held without trials,
we are already defeated;
The war on terror is lost
In the mirror of history
we are them, no different

Torture
WE don’t torture, once
a clear mantra, creed
truth about our nation
what we would never do
No more, no longer
rationalize a little violation
incremental erosion
a crumbling of the moral authority
of our whole people
How soon will we wake up
How soon will we reclaim
our principles
How long will the world
doubt our resolve once more
We can only hope,
their memory is short

The Fruits of Torture
We are reaping the whirlwind,
the fruits of torture, acts
committed in our names
A loss of identity, our place in the world
compromise, failed convictions,
missed opportunities
A growing reservoir of hate,
of those ready to take up arms
strap on bombs,
against us, our interests
Failing a moral test
doing that which we abhor
and bearing its stain
for years to come

Inviolate
Simple truths, essential truths
beliefs held inviolate
for our nation
to set us apart
cast off, dropped underfoot
walked upon
almost without thought
Ignoring the consequence
in abandoning our beliefs

Friendly Fire
In war, actions can have unintended
unwanted consequences, self-inflicted wounds,
friendly fire, not just on the battlefield.
How much more true in our world
now, after the twin-towers fell to rubble
Decisions in Baghdad, in the White House
change the status, the station of America
in the eyes of the world.
Expedient choices, abandoning principle, law,
for dubious gain
Hurting us, who we profess to be,
more than our enemies ever will.

History of the Victors, No More
It has been said that history
isn’t written by who was in the right;
but by who was left, after the battles;
Filtered by scribes of the conquerors
or so it has been in the world
before the current age.
Today, however, greater variety of voices
contradictory, contrary voices
each tell a different, competing truth
spread equally around the world
in mere milliseconds
about war, about struggle, of the acts
the commissions, the omissions,
of nation states, rogue groups,
each one being catalogued,
accumulated for the telling
of the history of this age,
unscripted and uncontrolled
by the victors anymore
isn’t written by who was in the right;
but by who was left, after the battles;
Filtered by scribes of the conquerors
or so it has been in the world
before the current age.
Today, however, greater variety of voices

We Have Become What we Abhor
Murderous madmen, willing
to abuse, to torture,
to inflict pain, indiscriminate
heartless, oft calculated
Unlike us, held up for ridicule,
sanction, censure, until now
We have changed, because of our hurt,
our anger, our loss,
become what we abhor;
become the madmen
committing atrocities
become that which we hate

Speaking from the Silence
After mighty wind,
the trembling of the earth,
a roaring fire. Then audibly,
Silence, to fill the prophet with awe.
Within the sheer silence was God,
heard by the prophet.
A message of guidance, of instruction
to overcome his fears
and follow God’s will

Compromised Authority
A painful truth is alive in the world
We now speak only with compromised authority
just another voice, no better and no worse.
Violating rights once written in stone,
held up as good news
for the world;
hollow now because of the choices
the slow ebb of our nation’s soul
Becoming our enemy
In the name of war.

A Great Fanfare
Like the Son,
triumphant in entry
into the holy city
there were heralds
and portents
before the presence of God
nature itself trumpeted the coming
of the God of his ancestors.
Like the Son, it was the humbleness
through which God appeared.
God wasn’t in the wind, the quake,
not in the fire.
It was from out of the silence, that God spoke
But, under the law,
the words were of Judgment
Not Christ’s saving grace.

Fratricide
Our soldiers in the field,
out in the desert sands
fighting, killing our brothers.
Sons of Ishmael, sons of Isaac
all, sons of Abraham,
the father of our faith

A Year Closer
We celebrate another turn
another year of her life
a year closer
to more meaningful milestones
But even here, the cusp,
a moment of closure,
an ending of elementary school.
No longer a little girl,
not yet a teen, in that awkward
in between age, eleven today
the beginning of the slow two-year march
inexorably, to thirteen.

Put on Your Cross
Like putting on a favorite coat, our glasses
a second skin
Choosing to subordinate our will
and take up our cross
daily, that is the Master’s call
to each one of us

New Creation
Metamorphosis,
like a snake casting off
an old skin, a crab
an outgrown shell,
or maybe more akin
to a caterpillar
reborn as a regal
butterfly with
panes of luminous color
We are a new creation
in Christ, new and clean
everything old has passed away
we have risen, death to sin
within the loving reconciliation
with our living Savior,
our loving creator God

Knew No Sin
Made him to be sin,
stained with our blood
the read stain of our
unfaithfulness, washed over him
coloring him a criminal
paying our price
on the rugged cross;
but that is half the story,
for that sacrifice
sin offering, made us clean
reconciled to God.
