Offered for us, received
the gospel, the good news
proof of the coming of the one
and the power of his name
The joy, the thanksgiving that we fee
the presence of the Spirit with us
we praise you almighty God
we bow before your throne
We drink of the cup you offer
we eat of the bread of life
we pray for insights into your love
ever humble before our God
We share the message of the Son
who came to set us free
to lift the stain of sin away
and rescue us from death

Call to Worship:
Let us praise God, the creator of heaven and Earth.
Let us seek God with open minds and open hearts.
May we feel the Holy spirit among us.
As the Scriptures are read and the Word proclaimed,
as prayers and music are offered, may we receive with
joy and thanksgiving what is offered for us.
Unison Prayer:
Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all
desires known, and from you no secrets are
hidden. Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the
inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may love
you with our whole self, and worthily praise your
holy name. Through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Luke 7:17-22
Prayer of Dedication:
Loving God, the giver of all that is good; our lives
are blessed daily by your gifts. Help us to receive
your gifts with such gratitude, that we will be giving,
as you are to us. We pray that through us the whole
world will know the gift of your generous love in
Jesus Christ, the one who gave his life for us, and for
the whole world.

For a Drowning Person
A word of challenge
rising from the pastor,
if our worship was for someone
a life preserver for a drowning person
In the scripture, in the message
in the songs upon our lips
a reflection of our savior
the power of his life
A message of hope,
truth in the power of his name
a way out of the wilderness
the love of God to share
New life in the one who came
to set the captives free
the hope of all, from then as now
the one who will come again

A Call to Discipleship
In the message, the service, the worship today
a call to discipleship, to walk as they did
to take the mantle of the work of Christ
to heal in his holy name
To reach our brother, our sister in pain
to look upon their face
To call upon the name of Christ
follow his call for our lives
to heed the cries of our neighbors
to go where we are led

An Insight to God
In the way in which the Messiah revealed
in the way in which the disciples healed
an insight to God
His way of servanthood
of faith unseen
to act upon the authority given
to heal in his holy name
By the power given
so we are to live
to love
and to forgive

A message of hope
the power of the name of Christ
a message of hope, for us all
healed by his name alone
no hands laid upon him
merely the intoning,
calling Christ now
to be present, to
heal in his name
a message of hope
in this story
of laity, calling on his name
in faith, believing in his authority
and acting on that faith
able to go, as we have been sent
to heal in Christ’s holy name

The Call into Worship
That we may receive
that which is offered for us
so were the words read aloud
the words I shared with the congregation
centering us, calling us into worship
into that state of readiness
to be open to what was to come
A message of hope, a kinship with those
the disciples who have called upon the Lord
those who have believed
who have acted on their call
Gaining an insight into God
on the way of a servant
the walk of a believer
A story of revelation
on the love of God
through the sending of his son
of the healing he performed
while he walked the earth
A telling of the legacy
of the work that is yet to be done
our place in the story
of our faith
and his coming yet to come

When was it?
When was the moment, the moments
the times in our lives,
when we were healed, spiritually changed?
How did these moments
make a difference in our lives?
These ringing questions, perhaps not poetic
ringing in our ears, hanging in the air
suspended over the congregation
in worship today
challenging us first to remember
to set a mood, a foundation
to hear a message challenging
in the story of the healing
one of the first acts of power
in the Acts of the Apostles
The timid followers
now using the name of Christ
the power of the Spirit within them
to boldly claim his name
and heal by the authority
the power of his name

A Smile Growing
A smile growing, in the way I was speaking
a smile growing, capturing my face
my voice rising, in the sharing
Christ revealing himself
to the disciples of John
Smiling in my heart
echoed in theirs
smiles upon their faces
a congregation joining, sharing
in the proofs of the coming of the king.

Resound
The one word, resound,
that the words resound
with the God’s own heart
More than written, more even
than that they were inspired
Filled with the heart of God
reverberating with his mighty word
a clarion call, filled, utter filled
Celebration and praise of God
in the words written down
a treasure for us, as we worship
Filled with the sound
the voice of God.

Jumping
Not begging for crumbs
no longer an outcast
shouting, leaping, jumping for joy
healed, physically, spiritually
in the name of Jesus Christ
able to walk, to go into the courts
to be in community, in the Temple
an outcast no more, jumping for joy
in praises to the King
He was healed, made whole
in the loving name of Christ.

Authentic
A pure, honesty, authentic
human encounter
looking at each other
squarely in the eye
Asking for his daily bread
for alms by which to live
Getting an offering of healing
a gift of saving, offered
in the name of Jesus Christ
Healed by the power of his name
by the power of his acts
by the authority given by God
to all who serve in his name

Alms
He was begging for alms,
money for the poor, this lame man
What he received, healing;
but not merely of his body,
healing of his soul, spiritual healing
making him clean, worthy
entering the gates, the courts,
entering the temple with shouts
with leaps, with joy
with unending praises to God
asking for alms,
by their faith,
receiving so much more.

Straight in the Eye
Looking straight in the eye
invoking the name of Christ
to him was all the power
through him alone
the apostle healed the lame
Authentic, certain faith
human to human
from God through him
another was healed
made whole, made right
dancing into the temple of God

We pray that through us the whole
world will know the gift of your generous love in
Jesus Christ, the one who gave his life for us, and for
the whole world.

invoking the name of Christ
to him was all the power
through him alone
the apostle healed the lame
Authentic, certain faith
human to human
from God through him
another was healed
made whole, made right
dancing into the temple of God

Courageously
One of the wonders of that moment
this story of a miracle
the healing of the lame
The belief of the disciples
courageously knowing
the power of his name
Claiming the authority to heal
declaring he could walk
in Jesus’ name.
To be so certain
to act so boldly
to courageously live
as they did
this is our prayer.

My Voice Rising
The words, this story, of his life,
of the proof of the Savior
of the coming of the Messiah.
This story, this moment,
the passing of the promise of John
the words he cried out in the wilderness
being revealed in this moment.
In this powerful witness,
the acts he was performing
declaring too, plainly
to these disciples of John.
My voice rising, joy flowing over me
these ancient words, the words of fulfillment
of the love of God, he example of the Son
welling up in me, pouring out
joy not to be contained.
Seeing the faces of the congregation
joining me in this mystery
the unfolding of this witness
of the Savior making himself known.
Together in worship, a congregation joining
centering in the wonder of the proof of the Messiah
revealed in the acts of his ministry
this Son of God, made known
in the touch of his hand
the power of his word.

Proof of the Savior
The savior’s own words
describing the acts of his life.
Through the work of his hands
the affirmation of his words.
Proof of the coming
the savior in the world.
Fulfillment of the scriptures
the words of the prophesies alive.
His healing touch,
his transforming words.
A life responding, in action
to the words in the wilderness.
A cadence of his answer
the question of John.

In Their Faces
If only I could have frozen that moment
the reaction of the congregation
in their faces, the nods
the smiles, the understanding
the joy in this moment
sharing the words of Christ
these words of his ministry
this moment of awareness, of proof
the actions of his life
his ministry
proving he was the Son
that he was the one
prayed for, for so long
the hope of the people
the one who is to come
It was in their faces, my voice rising
the smile spreading on my face
sharing the joy, the good news
for them, for us, for all of us
the Messiah come
to save the earth

Marks of the Potter’s Hand
Signs of his touch
marks of the Potter’s hand
his efforts recorded
written on the flesh, the tissue
on this flawed vessel
Places where imperfections
worked out by the molding
sculpting of his knowing, working
the clay, slowly, giving to His will
Reformed by the touch, loving touch
the healing of brokenness
made useful, ever needing more
of the Potter’s hands, his marks on me

While Others Were Praying
while others passed him
while they were entering in
the hour of prayer
Two of the twelve
stopping to share more
more than meager coins
offering him life,
healing him;
he rose, leaping
praising God
while others were praying
unaware

proof of his identity

The One
John asked, “Are you the one,
the one who is to come?”
In his service, in his healing
not on a throne, not worldly power
with the power of heaven
authority over spirits, over sin,
over death itself
with words of power, of love
in his ministry
being the one who has come
Hallelujah and Amen!

So Undignified
I can picture the wagging tongues
those there for show
to be seen, publicly praying
seeing the beggar, the lame
jumping in the Temple
shouting for joy!
So undignified, the clucking hens
within the gate, in the courts
his authentic praise
leaping for joy!

Five Ways to Support Victims of Torture During Torture Awareness Month
Dear Raymond,
The National Religious Campaign Against Torture (NRCAT) has 5 simple things you can do to support victims of torture and put an end to torture around the world:
Organize an educational event for your congregation, using NRCAT’s new 18-minute DVD and discussion guide: “Ending U.S.-sponsored Torture Forever." You can view the trailer or order a copy from NRCAT's website.
Plan to join us in Washington, DC on June 11 for a Religious Public Witness in front of the White House.
Incorporate a prayer or sermon about torture in a worship service during June. You can access a variety of worship resources, on NRCAT's website.
Make your opposition to torture visible with NRCAT’s new banners and bumper stickers. Order today from NRCAT’s Online Store. If your congregation already has an anti-torture banner, please display it this month.
Organize a delegation to visit the local district office of your Member(s) of Congress to advocate for a Commission of Inquiry and legislation making elements of the President’s executive order permanent in law. Members of Congress will most likely be in their home districts during the July 4th recess (June 29 to July 3).
We've had over 1600 people add their name to our statement of faith The Truth Will Set You Free.
Please take this opportunity to add your name to the petition.
Jim Winkler, General Secretary for GBCS, recently commented "I cannot conceive in my wildest dreams of Jesus Christ giving any blessing to torture." We need people of faith to say "No!" to torture by urging the U.S. Congress and Obama Administration to support an commission of inquiry into torture.
Peace,
Bill Mefford
Director, Civil and Human Rights

Strangely Warmed
Wesley’s description, his conversion
an appropriate thought on Pentecost morn’
Strangely warmed, so they must have been
flames of fire, resting on them
Changing their ways, the path of their days
the lives evermore, guided by the Spirit
Living within them, their beating hearts
the embers of that day, ever indwelling within
Our days like them, like him, the founders of our faith
the fire of the spirit warming us in our hearts

Unison Prayer,

pray that your Spirit of illumination would fall upon us
gathered here today so that we may hear your still small
voice, guiding us as we sojourn through this world. May we
feel Your presence with us here today. Come Spirit, fill our
hearts this day. Amen”

Holy Fire
Holy Fire
Spirit of Pentecost
burn bright within me
my heart, my hands,
my voice
Guide me, teach me,
transform my way
let me be like them
and spread your light
your love to all, I pray
Holy Fire,
flames of the Spirit
the fingers of God
mold me, change me
make me a vessel of your love
Use me, as you see fit
let me be your servant
your hands and your feet
Let me be your voice

With Power
With power they would preach
these timid souls reborn
the flames of Pentecost
falling down from heaven
the world to bring to thee
A wonder to behold
these men speaking in different tongues
the heart of many were transformed
by the one message
which they preached
The love of God
through the message of the Son
filled with the Spirit
the meek became lions
to share the word of God
So, we, each one
in our time and place
must be like them
those timid souls empowered
and step out in our faith

God’s Power
God’s power
coming down from above
roaring from heaven
on the wings of a dove
Filling their hearts
with flames from on high
leading them all
to preach to the skies
Changing the world
one heart at a time
spreading God’s love
to your heart and mine
Flames from heaven
reaching each heart
in that one room in Jerusalem
the church had its start

All in One Place
At the birth, they were all in one place
waiting for the one who had been promised by Christ
Flames of the Spirit descending upon them
tongues they did not know to spread His love to all
A church born, from the seeds of that place
planted into every heart who hears of his love
Washed in the water, saved by his blood
filled with the Spirit, led by his love
Sending the flames
from that one place in time
to the ends of the earth
and to your heart and mine

Like a Freight Train
Like a steam engine, a freight train
roaring on ethereal tracks in the heavens
the presence of God, the Spirit
over the house where they were gathered
A cloud of flames, descending on each one
falling, onto, into, each one of their hearts
Words of love, words of power
in tongues they did not know
Speaking to those
who came into their midst
Words shared,
of the story of the Christ
A message of love,
shared in languages unknown
spreading the flames
like a brush fire

Fire, Germinating Fire
The seeds of the creator
planted in our hearts
germinated by the fire
the Spirit working
to transform us from within
Fire, germinating fire
burn within my beating heart
give me words to share

Spirit growing
the days of my life
feed me with

Change me, make me anew

transform my timid soul

Shaking the House
The wind, the Spirit of God
shaking the house, the gathering place
the sanctuary of the church
the place of the faithful, the disciples
Transforming them, together, each one
a prophet, a leader, from the sheep of his fold
the fire within, burning bright
pressing them to share his light
Shaking too, the foundations of the world
for the world would never be the same
the fire, the message, spreading
to all who hunger, to the ends of the earth
A movement, a spreading, the fire still at work
burning in the saints, from age to age
tongues of fire, alive in each heart
opening a way for the flame to leave its mark

Given Power
In that moment, the church born
given power, by the breath of God
the roaring flames, descending
touching flames upon them
planting seeds of power
within them, each of them
in their beating hearts
The same seeds, the word of God
planted within you and within me
written on our hearts
the Spirit of the flames
the fire of that day
burning still,

All Together
The faithful, the disciples
the followers of Christ
all together, all in one place
waiting for the promise
power from above
The Spirit coming
like the roar of thunder
shaking them, trembling
filled with wonder
In tongues of fire
the blessing they received
speaking in words
they could not believe
Spreading his message
the love of God
to each living heart
tending the garden
a harvest to grow

the followers of Christ
all together, all in one place
waiting for the promise
power from above
The Spirit coming
like the roar of thunder
shaking them, trembling
filled with wonder
In tongues of fire
the blessing they received
speaking in words
they could not believe
Spreading his message
the love of God
to each living heart
tending the garden
a harvest to grow

Growth in the Flames
There is growth in the flames
the transforming fire of the Spirit
changing the course of our lives
listening to the voice of God
the Spirit burning within us
guiding our way, if we turn to him
growing stronger,
in our walk on this earth
Finding our voice

Embers Glowing
The smoldering embers
the planting of the law, the teachings
your holy word, your hands forming each of us
deep within, in the recesses
the silent places of our hearts
Embers glowing, the fire of the Spirit
burning white, new, changing us
transforming followers, disciples
Leaders, teachers,
messengers of your love
Embers a fire, a burning within
to share your love, your gift of grace
the Holy Spirit burning
giving fire to our faith
and passion to our praise

Writing Poetry
From One House Church
In the beginning,
they were gathered
all together there, waiting
as he had commanded, waiting
The Spirit coming,
like the rush of wind
roaring across the sky
Like the tongues of fire
each one resting, falling
changing them forever
From one house church
the world transformed
one heart at a time
the Spirit within

Call to Worship: Psalm 104:31-33 (NIV)
Unison Prayer,
“Almighty God, Giver of knowledge and might, we come
before your throne to worship You in Spirit and truth. We
pray that your Spirit of illumination would fall upon us
gathered here today so that we may hear your still small
voice, guiding us as we sojourn through this world. May we
feel Your presence with us here today. Come Spirit, fill our
hearts this day. Amen”
