To Shine Our Light

With the saints before us
to shine our light
reflecting our Savior
deep in our hearts

Sharing our witness
with all we meet
going with our brother
being his hands and feet

Project your light
the gift of life
share God’s love

We are the beacons
the witnesses now
we are to offer

put on the altar
seen as a gift
to be offered to God

Completing the Circle

The final stones gathered
placed where they are needed
finishing the circle
the symmetry complete

The trees rimmed
matching the walk
the stones of the labyrinth
placed where they are

Hope in Tomorrow

When we struggle today
when the burden seems overwhelming
when we look to the future
there is hope in tomorrow

The battles raging
but the war already won
today there are trials
but we look to the Son

Christ redeemed us
the victory is ours
rising with our savior
to see a bright tomorrow
at the end of all our days

Mottled with Rain

The ground covered
the red maple leaves
fallen in a hurry
mottled with rain

Saturated color
yet muting the red
heavy on the ground
infused with the wet

The Trees Stripped Bare

The stronger winds
the rain in the night
exposing the limbs
the arms of the trees
stripped bare of their leaves

The colors muted
under the trees
a sea of color
as far as the eye can see

Wet folding in
an envelope of dew
drenched on the ground
more raking to do

Seeping in

Inside the rain
the wet seeping in
wicking the heat
a chill to my skin

Wishing for warmth
heat in the car
glad I drove
though we don’t live far

For All the Saints

In remembrance of them
remembered together
raising their names
in the congregation’s hearing

For all the saints
who have led us
feeding our flames
our spirits burning

Lighting a candle
the fire growing
remembering all
who showed us the way

Gathered with the Saints

Sharing this day
in this sacred space
gathered with saints
in love and holiness

Sitting in silence
coming forward with names
the saints of our lives with us
sharing with each other
lighting the flames in turn

Sharing His grace
the love of our savior
the redeemer, the creator
with our saints gathered round
with us on this hallowed ground

Passing on the Flame

The other saints
some who do not know
the love of God yet

Saints yet to be
when they come to realize
feel his sweet caress

God’s love raining down
passing on the flame
until all are in the light,
all are gathered in

As their names were read
a chime from the pipes
pealing in the congregation
Lighting their wicks
the light of our saints growing
gathering together
in loving memory
gathering with us

Joining with the Saints

Kindling the fire
all of us together
shining in this night
our light, our gifts, our fire
joining with the saints
that same flame
the Spirit of Christ
burning brightly
up on the lampstand
the altar of his grace
the lintels of our hearts
alive with that same fire
joining with the saints
in worshipping you
warm in your embrace

Healed by the Spirit

Death under the law
the wages of sin
all of us lost
none to be gathered in

Healed by the Spirit
God’s redeeming grace
Christ came to earth
taking our place

Paying our price
the debt that we owe
making us clean
that we may grow

Living in you
that is the start
walking in faith
we must do our part

The saints before us
leading us on
showing us the way
to lead us on home

Scattering the Seeds Richly

All of us to be fishers
to gather the harvest
called to be sowers
workers in the field
in service to our master

Scattering seeds richly
sowing his message
into fertile soil
sharing God’s love freely
so that all would believe

In the Gathered Flames

A piece of Christ’s love
the beating Spirit
the fire of Pentecost
in the gathered flames

A spark of God’s grace
burning before us
quickening our hearts
as each name was read

Our saints glowing
burning brightly
the light of their faith
shining on us

Gathered together
here, in worship
coming before God
in this holy place

All of us part
of the single flame
the love of God here
shining in our midst

The fire burning brighter
when we share with our neighbors
the love of God with others
like seeds scattered richly
into fertile soil

his infinite love

life within us

Learning in Our Hearts

Christ growing
burning in our hearts
the redeemer’s fire
His Spirit living
planted within us

Being a student
a true disciple of Christ
learning in our hearts
when we act in love

To love God
and our fellow man
going as we are led
on the dusty road with Christ
holding our trembling hand

The Spirit of Life

The Spirit, the law
God’s word in us
the piece of Christ
His light, shining
burning in our hearts
Eyes able to see
to do the work of Christ
to be his hands and feet
his voice in this world

The Spirit of life
of the love of God
guiding our every step
if we turn away from the world
and turn to Him instead
Spreading the message
the true grace of God,
servanthood of our king
the love of the master to all here below
a life with him instead

of a new covenant
--not of the letter but of the Spirit;
for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.”

In Humbleness

Not to seek attention
to be lifted up
offering instead service
sharing their cup

Their faith beating
in each of our hearts
living in humbleness
each one doing their parts

Reflecting Their Light

Each of us
in some way
part of the flames
burning on the altar
the memory of the saints
fresh in our hearts

Each of us
the fire burning
within our hearts
the Spirit guiding
leading us into worship
following the saints
on the journey of faith

Multiplying Their Fire

Building, growing
as each candle was lit
echoing off the glass
the brass of the cross
the gathering glow
the altar alive
with rich memory

Multiplying, increasing
their fire rising
more than these
the individual flames
the fire in us too
as our saints were raised
in loving memory

brighter than their flames

Flames of the Fire

Flames burning ever
sharing with us
flames of the fire
the fire of Christ

Love burning ever
the saints with us still
aglow together
in the heavenly light

Sharing Christ
in remembering them too
those who have led us to You
in all they say and do

Those who have gone before
leading the way
sharing the grace of Christ
in their walk each day

Pieces of His Light

Somehow so evident
placed on the altar
the living fire of the saints
their names raised
shared in the congregation
in loving memory

Pieces of His light
that which burns within
calling us to reverence
to worship our God
feeling His presence
in the congregation with the saints
who have gone before

In the Hearing of the Congregation

The saints who showed the way
who walked humbly in Christ
raised up one by one
in the hearing of the faithful
the congregation gathered
sharing in worship
joy in remembering
the saints who have gone before
showing us the Christ
those who have served faithfully
going the way of sacrifice

Casting Our Lines Deeper

Casting our lines deeper
out into the waters
where the unknown saints roam
far from our father
out in the world
where they now live
Ours to cast the lines
the hope of our savior
to train the body of Christ
to build our neighbors up
We are to help to bring them in
into the fold again
Close to our father once more
toward our heavenly home

Sowing Hope Downstream

Like those stocking a river
young into the waters
sowing hope downstream
reaching distant shores

Like a farmer planting
sowing into the winds
letting the seed find good soil
in distant lands unknown

So we bring Christ
to believers yet to be
saints in a future day and age
if we are faithful to our call

Light a Candle

We light a candle
for some of the saints
those in our lives
who showed us the way
Who led us to faith
who showed us Christ
who humbly served
that others may rise
come to Him
that other children
would see paradise

Small Flames

Small flames of their faith
in their answers to the pastors
bits of the hope we share
in the words they offer

Small flames growing
shining into the darkness
the little children speaking
of the grace in which we believe

One Flame Still Burning

After the service
the congregation left
sitting for a moment
in my pew alone
looking at the altar
one flame still burning
reminding me of your light
that never will be extinguished
shining, alive, in the darkness
bringing us all hope
in the grace of God
in a future to unfold
in the timing of our king

illumined by the saints

those whom we know

because you descended from heaven

in Him can I trust

At the Table With Us

All the saints
with our Lord
At the table with us
speaking now as then
a promise of community
in remembrance of Christ
who came and died
that we may live
who came before for us
that we may know God
living humbly, faith
going the way of the cross

Such a Table

Unbound by all walls
a cloud of witnesses,
the saints with us
at such a table
known by heaven alone
all of us gathered
at the table of the Lord

Remembering His gift
His life, His sacrifice
all who have gone before
the saints to this day
who have walked on this way
before all of us, leading us still
in the way of the Christ

Shards Cut

Shards of God’s love
planted in our hearts
the Spirit crying
when we stray from Love

Shards cut us
to call us from the pit
to turn our lives to Him
that we may truly live

Shards of God’s love

Shards of God’s love
shining in each beating heart
a seed of heaven planted,
within the clay of each one

Needing to be tended
to be fed with your love
his breath giving us life
all of us connected
to our creator, to all eternity

If we could but see
that light in our neighbors
how different would the world
would all life be

As to the least of these
the savior will say in the gathering
bringing the sheep in
to the gates of heaven

How many more
would be gathered in
if the words of the judgment
were understood by man

A hint of divine truth
the connectedness of creation
the creator in each beating heart
in the face of every stranger

In Each Flickering Flame

A piece of our faith
our heritage, our beliefs
in each flickering flame
one of our saints
who went before us

Each of the flames
part of the one light
the light of Christ shining
a presence in this place
a reminder of our faith

“Living Like A Saint. . . Oh Yah!”

Good Morning. . . Happy Halloween/All Saints Day! Today we celebrate those saints that have gone before us. . . those people in our lives that made a mark on it. . . for the better. We celebrate those of our faith that have paved the way for us to worship God in Spirit and in Truth. You know. . . as I grew up I always thought about Saints and “Saintly hood”. I mean I heard about all the people who are saints and thought to myself “I could never be that good to be considered a saint. . . I would have to live the perfect life, make no mistakes, be totally devoted to God. . . I would have to give my life up and I am not sure I can do that.” I mean what does a saint look like anyway? Are they people who walk around with an illumination above their heads which we call a halo? Do we have to be “perfect” to even be considered to be one? Well. . . let’s take a look at what Luke has to say about what a saint would look like. . . maybe we can find an answer there. . . but let’s go to the throne of grace so that we may see more clearly what the scriptures have to say. . . I know that I need all the help I can get. . .

The Lord be with you. . .
And also with you. . .
Let us pray. . .

Giver of all wisdom. . . we pray that you would open up your ancient word to us. May we understand the words in your Book of Life. . . give us ears to hear you still small voice speaking to us through the pages of history and through those whom you have put in our lives. Speak Lord. . . your children are listening.

As I mentioned before our prayer, let’s take a look at what Jesus said in the Book of Luke. . . let’s hear Jesus’ guide. . . what His “Sainthood 101” may look like. The words are found in Luke 6 verses 20-31. I’ll be reading from the God’s Word Translation this morning. . .

As I have said on several occasions. . . Jesus was a radical guy. Everything He taught was the opposite of what society said during His time. . . as well as ours. So what does this passage tell us of “Saintly Living”?

Well. . . the way I see it. . . the saintly life consists of being poor, now not so much as poor in money but poor in spirit. . . not haughty. . . not “holier than thou” but a life that is humble.

The Saintly living. . . being hungry. . . not always meaning hungry for food but hungry for God. . . hungry for His word. . . hungry to know Him more. The crying piece I see as seeing what is going on around them and mourning. . . crying for those around them. . . crying out to God for those around them and being joyous to see God move in the lives and situations around them.

There are those around the saints that hate them and thin k they are foolish because of their love and trust in God instead of the tangible things around them as society would have them believe. . . they persevere in faith. . . they run the race and are faithful to that race wanting the prize that is in Heaven. They are happy to just be an instrument of God.

Now the next part I find really radical. . . they love their enemies and are kind to all. . . even those who hate and persecute them. Now I don’t know about you but that is a hard one for me to grasp. . . it is difficult to love someone when they are making your life miserable. The way I see what Luke is talking about when he talks about how horrible it is for those whom things are going well for is that we. . . as a human race. . . sometimes forget where our blessings come from. We as a race tend to forget where it is we came from. . . forget about those whom we may have left behind. . . forget about the life we lived before we accepted the grace that is given through Christ Jesus’ sacrifice for us.

As saints, we have a job to do. . . a calling on our lives. I like the way Bishop Weaver put it during one of our Annual Conferences recently. . . and I am paraphrasing here. . . The saints before us are “upstream” from us in the “river of faith”. We learn by their example how to follow God and to live a life that is “pleasing to God”. We are upstream to those who are downstream from us. They are looking to fish (learning how to be fishers of men), looking to find food (that Spiritual food that has been passed on from those upstream from us), looking to find “the Way” (the way to live a saintly life). We learned to shine our light into the world from those upstream and we are to shine for those who are downstream. . . those saints to be. . . to go ye into the world. 1 Peter 2:12 tells us “Live decent lives among unbelievers. Then, although they ridicule you as if you were doing wrong while they are watching you do good things, they will praise God on the day he comes to help you.”

What does a saint look like? Have you looked in the mirror today? That’s what a saint looks like. I want you to look at your neighbor and say “Why you are looking very saintly this morning”. And answer back. . . “Oh yah. . . I’m living life like a saint. . . ”

Let us pray. . .

Loving and compassionate God, we thank you for those saints you have put in our lives. . . those who taught us how to follow you and to hear your still small voice. We pray that we too will be saints for those who are “downstream” from us. May we be truly disciples of you, training up the saints to be. . . teaching those who are waiting to fish. . . to learn how to be fishers of men. . . so that they too may be up stream to those who are downstream from them. May our lives be that of love and compassion for those who are in need. We love you Lord. . . teach us the way to go and may we not turn either to the right or the left. In Jesus’ name we pray. . .

Amen.

In Blessedness

To live our lives as children
faithful to our God
walking in holiness, guided
by the calling of Christ

To see the world
through the eyes of Christ
to go where we are led
to live in blessedness

Not in the ways of the world
in the belief of mankind
in the faith of Christ
the savior of our lives

Seeing the Beatitudes

Not something to be sorrowful over
not a cross to bear
a way of living in God’s grace
to feel His presence near
Seeing the beatitudes
the blessedness of the saints
the way to live life here on earth
the calling to walk with our brothers
our sisters here below
to humbly lift each other us
everywhere that we go

Like a Saint

Like those who have gone before
those who have believed
who have acted on their faith
heeding his call

Living like a saint
like those who have inspired us
to see the world through Jesus’ eyes
not through the ways of the world

Following his calling
heeding his message
living like the saints before us
in love and humbleness
