Murdering, terrorizing
declaring war on his people
not “the violence in Libya”
but death in the streets
The madman brutalizing
denying them rights
killing his people
in an abuse of his might

Living in union
caught, entwined
filled by your spirit
guided by love
Centered on Christ
caught in his grace
informed by his lessons
giving us life
Not for us only

Give Me Gifts to Share
Make me aware, oh Lord
of you right by my side
I know you are already here
needing to sense your presence
Give me gifts to share
a light to the world
teach me where to serve
to spread your holy word
Offer me up, oh Lord
let me be poured out
let me offer them hope
let me offer them love
Use my voice, my God
sharing your holy word
give me a message to share
with this whole world
Christ is the Messiah
the living son of God
whiter than human’s could make him
listen to his holy word
to love one another
to humbly serve the Lord

The Clay of My Witness
The salt of my walk
the clay of my witness
fill me with oil
that I may be light
A vessel of your grace
my body but your glove
filling me with your good
to utter overflowing
May I be drenched
may I be wrung out
may I be offered
as a sacrifice of love
Use me as you planned
before I was born
use me completely

A Vessel of Your Grace
Feeling you with me
molding my clay
firing my with your spirit
imprinted with your touch
transformed by your love
A vessel of your grace
the wind in my sails
the spirit guiding me on
leading me on the floor
Leading me on
giving me words
a message to share
a light to the whole world
May I be filled
that I may be poured out
the message of your love
refilling my cup
Never running out
like the widow and the oil
the manna of your goodness
the cup of salvation
filling us to overflowing

Remember Me
Hanging on his words
as he changed the ancient rite
the bread his body
and the cup his blood
Offering these to us
in humble sacrifice
knowing the betrayal to come
and the way of the rugged cross
Remember me, he said
echoing through time
sharing with each other
the bread and the wine
One body in him
together one nation
fed that we may serve
to share his holy message

Submission to God
Letting down our guard
stripping away our masks
standing before our neighbors
humble, as a servant
Open to God’s calling
letting the world see
the testimony we have of God,
open and authentic
Being the people
he wants us to be
the salt of this good earth
being his light out into the world
To carry his message of love
to the ends of the earth
giving up all control
trusting alone in God

I submit myself to thee
let me be your love
for everyone I meet
Abiding in the vine
a shoot of the root
a stem of the branch
growing in you
Lead me Lord
in all I say and do
lead me on
ever closer to you.

Captive to Your Grace
Not in control
turning to you instead
away from the world
willing to be led
Captive to your grace
a prisoner of love
moving me into the world
my body merely your glove
A vessel of your grace
the wind in my sails
the spirit guiding me on
leading me on the floor
You are in control
I submit myself to thee
let me be your love
for everyone I meet

The Lord’s Table
We partake
get a foretaste
the feast of heaven
at the Lord’s Table
Bowing before him
at the altar rail
taking the bread the cup
remembering his sacrifice
Hearing the words
his body broken
his blood poured out
murmuring praises to him
As we eat of the supper
he shared here on earth
knowing, perhaps in part,
the power of that moment
Before the cup in the garden
his prayers to be passed by
submitting his will to God
taking the cup to his lips
Before his betrayal
before they ran away
yet he stayed faithful to God
going to the cross
Kneeling at the Lord’s Table
each doing their part
filled with the memory of him
going with Christ in our heart

Not Our Table
Humbly we come
to you, Oh God
to your table
the sacrifice
this meal
this sharing of the bread
the cup, your life
your body, dying for us
Not our table
not in the least
we are giving an invitation
to feast at your table
set just for us
to come as we are able
to live in your love

Living After He Is Risen
The admonition to be silent
to not say what God said
to wait for his rising
his rising from the dead
No longer applicable
two thousand years hence
able to shout from the rooftops
just what God said
This is my child
my living son
listen to him, to what he said
God’s love come down
Teaching us how to live
to walk in this life
to act as a servant
loving all that we meet
Living after he is risen
blessed we are
to feel him with him
to see him in each star
To go into the world
carrying his light
burning as he did
whiter than white

Under the Boot of the Madman
The struggle for freedom
cloaked in his repression
the protesters taken away
abducted in the night
The people fearful
hearing mixed messages
lies and the truth
a blur in their sight
Under the boot of the madman
fighting for power
relenting not an inch
in his denying their freedoms
Mocking the world
a thumb in their eyes
dropping bombs on his people
fighter planes in the sky
Only action will break the yoke of bondage
freeing the people, the captives
from the terror of the tyrant
needing to act, to set them free
standing with the martyrs
dying in the streets

Freedom to Assemble
Happy to consider
the profound difference
the freedoms we cherish
to pray for their struggle
to shake off the yoke
the boot of their oppressor
to enjoy the freedom to assemble
to speak out for justice
to set the captives free
So much we take for granted
as we did yesterday
gathering to decide our budget
as a people together
in the power of our voices

from Galilee to Jerusalem
the journey to the cross
from the cross to the grave
rising to the skies

Thankful for the Difference
Stopping in our worship
offering up a praise
a thanksgiving for our freedom
thankful for the difference
what we take for granted
than over so much of the earth
Able to gather as a people
to debate freely, without fear
all of us as equals
hearing other voices
to reach a consensus, a decision
coming out of our freedoms
our voices, speaking as one
So unlike the stories
we are watching on the news
thankful for our freedoms
and the price paid for them
so many sacrificing
standing against oppression
serving our nation willingly
so we may enjoy our freedoms

Beginning, Ending in Light
The star that guided their way
the love that fired his clay
the light of God that guides us
that shows us the way
Epiphany to Transfiguration
beginning, ending in light
showing us the way to God
how to live in life
Seeking the holy one
the babe, the living God
the one who climbed the mountaintop
the word, the one made flesh
Seeing who he really is
the man transformed, made pure
hardening his living clay
made a vessel for love
Ready for that journey
that led to Jerusalem
filled with the power of God
the Son of God, of Man

fired in God’s light
hardened on the mountaintop

His Clay Hardened
On the mountain that day
something profound changed
changed forever, always
turning his face
to prepare for the journey
to go to Jerusalem
the coming of his sacrifice
his clay hardened that day
on the mountain with God

Teach Me
What I need to know
teach me, Lord
use me, Lord
as I am
how I will be
in my journey
learning
one from another
sharing our seeds
our gifts
our salt, our clay
one candle lighting another
our oil ready
out light lit
offering hope
offering Christ
healing the world
one heart at a time
starting with us
lifting us up
out into the world
carrying your light
teach me to give
all that I am
teach me to share
all that you give

Instruct One Another
Our charge complete
spoken in love
to teach one another
to bring each other up
to share God’s message
sharing his love
to instruct one another
in his grace, his gifts
poured out for us
in the blood of the lamb
offering himself for us
that we might live

Buying Time
The chill of their lies
buying time to regroup
to fend off the people
to abduct them in the night
to crush the rebellion
The lies of the rulers
corrupt in their power
bombing their people
crying out for freedom
for fundamental rights
The world silent
complicit in their deception
giving a stage for their madness
to speak without consequence
spewing lies in the air
buying time to regroup
to fend off the people
to abduct them in the night
to crush the rebellion
The lies of the rulers

The Granary
This poem is about my memory,
of the jarring sensation
seeing a photograph circa 1994,
of one of the all-time
great pictures, capturing evil,
before it rose up to full flowering
of Joseph Goebbels,
in 1933 at the League of Nations
Life Magazine article about the photo
on display at The Granary Gallery
on Martha’s Vineyard
taken by Alfred Eisenstaedt (1898 - 1995),
a master of black and white. Photojournalist of the
century, http://www.digitaljournalist.org/issue9911/eisieintro.htm.

Complicit in Their Propaganda
Sitting down with evil
giving lies a stage
complicit in their propaganda
giving voice to their rage
The opiate of a perception
a mandate to cover news
but letting the leaders
command the stage, our views
A platform for their deceptions
covering the cruel facts
Their oppression of their people
willing to kill the innocents
for another day in power
Deny them this vehicle
let them rant from the balcony
the madmen, dictators
should not control the media
Independence should be the watchword
not trying to catch them in lies
in respectfully waiting for them to speak
in a place of their choosing
Cover the reality in the street
or refuse to broadcast their lies
giving lies a stage
complicit in their propaganda
giving voice to their rage
The opiate of a perception
a mandate to cover news
but letting the leaders
command the stage, our views
A platform for their deceptions

Their oppression of their people

Giving Voice to Madness
Sitting down with evil
pure oppression
willing to crush resistance
to silence other voices
Sitting down with evil
Like Goebbels spreading lies
calling up baser instincts
to shut the people down
Calling out false demons
denying what they are doing
leading to the death of their people
in a desperate cry for power
Giving voice to madness
in a buttoned-down shirt
making brutality sounding reasonable
at such an incredible cost
Stop sitting down with tyrants
giving voice to madness
marginalize the rulers
who are willing to commit genocide
to kill their own people
