“Now Thank We All Our God”

A prayer of illumination so that God will speak through me or in-spite of me…
Read the Psalm:

What are you thankful for? This is a question that we usually ask this time of year as we celebrate the holiday of Thanksgiving. So…what are you thankful for? (Give people a chance to answer) It’s seems as if the business world…the secular world…kind of just jumps right over this holiday and right into the next one… Well the next one is the one that they make most of their money…Christmas. I don’t know about you but bugs me that they jump right into Christmas even before Halloween…I think they should be celebrating Thanksgiving because they should give thanks for our giving…

So, here we are standing on the door step of new season of remembering when love came down for all of humanity. We are also getting ready to celebrate thanksgiving with our friends and family. We really do have a lot to be thankful for. As I read the Psalm this morning so many images came to mind. Images of God opening the gate for us through which we can enter in…that gate being our Risen Lord Jesus Christ…for He is the gate of the Lord through which all must enter in to be saved. The image of Jesus in the manger as God answered our plea for salvation…the very person that was rejected has become the way to freedom. The image of God shining His light on humanity as we comfort in song because of what He has done…He is our God whom I shall praise and exalt on High. There are many images in this scripture and I invite you to read these words and contemplate the season that we will be entering soon…the season of Advent.

SO how do we live a life of thankfulness? How do we take that “thanksgiving” and turn it into a daily “matter of the heart”? Colossians 3:16-17 states…
“Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”

By living our lives loving and helping one another, our hearts will be over joyed…singing a song of thanks to God. We live like this by doing everything as for doing it for Jesus who will come in and give us a heart transplant…changing from a stony, selfish one to one that is flesh and full of love. That is how our lives turn from a dirge to one full of the joy of the Lord…spilling over with thanksgiving…

Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus. (1 Thessalonians 5:18 NIV)

We have so much to be thankful for. We can be thankful to God for all that He has done…is doing…and will do in the future in our lives. We can be thankful to the saints that have gone before us who have showed us the way to live. We can be thankful of their gift of faith that they shared in a world full of chaos and hopelessness. And we can show our thankfulness by taking their example in life and live it out in our own.

We have a lot to be thankful for. What are you thankful for? Let us put God at the head of our “Thanks Giving” table as we give thanks for His goodness and mercy found in and through our Risen Lord, the Savoir of the world, Jesus Christ. We truly have much to be thankful for.

Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever…
Amen
