Corrupted by Their Power

Parallels in the stories
the king and the leaders
two ends of Christ’s life
each corrupted by their power

And in both parts of history
another aspect as well
the king and leaders of the temple
unable to see his glory

They waited for centuries
for the coming of the Lord
now here upon the earth
all the signs of prophecy
fulfillment of God’s promise

But blinded by their station
corrupted by their power
holding on to their earthly reward
sentencing the Messiah,
our savior, of all the people
to a Roman death on the cross

Fourth Sunday in Lent
&
In Secret

In secret, in darkness
the king, the powerful, plotted
seeking to hide, to extinguish
to blot out the light

Gathering, scheming
planning in secret
sending the Magi on
to find the Christ

Trying to deceive
to use the strangers
unwitting spies
to identify the child

In a dream, the plot illumined
going to their own land
led to another way

The same with the Christ-child
in a dream, a warning
the child moving in secret
the light saved for another day
