On the bank of the river

Waiting our turn
on the bank of the river
to come to John in the water
to wash ourselves clean
repenting of our past
preparing for our king

On the bank of the river
waiting my turn
watching what was happening
my head abruptly turned

Something so different
John so hesitant
objecting to the man before him
not wanting to get him wet

Their exchange so powerful
stillness all around
suddenly a voice from above
shaking the very ground

But that wasn’t the end
as he came out of the waters
clouds opening up
a dove descending
landing upon him
changing the world forever
