laws that make a neighbor property of another

How can we understand
why do we let it happen
law, to protect, to heal, to save
law meant to give life
a pathway to love, to eternal life
the gifts God gave in covenant,
in commandments, in the life of Christ
corrupted, converted, made a sham
in laws of this world, evil, condemned
laws that oppress, that kill
laws that make a neighbor,
our brothers, our sisters,
yes, even the strangers,
a piece of property of another
how can this be, when we have the Word
the love of God revealed
hope in that life, that life given for us
freedom, yet for this, for evil laws
a condemnation, a stain on us all
