Giving Up on Perfect

We need to see the incarnation
the coming of Christ
the waiting in Advent
how it really was
Giving up on perfect
an idealized sense of his birth
seeing it as it was
messier, more complicated
more profound, here on earth
Christ was fully human
the stable was a cave
the pregnancy a scandal
before the Magi came
Christ was a refugee
fleeing before Herod
living in a distant land
in the sanctuary of Egypt
Giving up on perfect
on the silhouette of the stable
the truth far more a miracle
the reality of God’s coming
