ripping off the mask of anger

a mask, a second skin
a long-known way of living
seeing the world through a clouded lens
through a jaundiced vision
knowing pain, familiar, reflecting
holding onto this, strangely comforting

ripping off their mask of anger
a forced act of healing
something they know so well
that they have seen in the mirror
lines etched on their faces
part of their portrait
not giving it up willingly,
it has to be taken from them

a mask, a second skin
layer upon layer
pulling at the threads
that it might unravel
forcing them to let go
to release their anger
that which keeps them
from walking in the light

ripping off their mask of anger
damage, their life, the scar tissue
exposing the wounds, issues
the source of that anger
only then able truly
to leave it to God.
