An Audible Gasp – Newtown – v5

I first heard it, the news of the shooting, driving,
tears welling up, I could not control them;
I heard my own gasp
reverberating, not stopping,
echoing in the moving car.

An audible gasp, a presence, remembered,
when we all were brought into that tragedy
that moment unthinkable, madness, chaos,
by the radio, TV screens, the images,
not wanting to believe it happened again.

An audible gasp, in horror, in shock,
not something to believe, to accept,
the innocents lost in their youth;
The authorities not removing the bodies
from the rooms, knowing Death reigned inside.

An audible gasp was our common response
as each person faced that terror, the images,
our nation held in fear, once again;
Alive in our hearts that day,
Never to be forgotten.
