Graves of New Orleans

There is something rare
something grand
something right
about the graves of New Orleans
not hidden flat stones
carved names
in the dirt and grass
nor plain letters and dates
of so many graveyards
these are cathedrals
homes for the dead
worthy vessels
for our forebears
festooned with mirth and
reverence, with Spanish moss
and southern charm
tenements and flats
stay awhile
