Velvet Horns

Two denizens, children of the forest
broke the tree line
stood in the civilized space,
the green clearing
the lawn behind her house
stood in the open
smelling July
young bucks
for whom the moon calls
another season,
another cycle
in the lee of the wood
satiny fur
velvet horns
