My Capable Wife

A story many of us can ably attest
praising for the ones,
the women in our lives
not the ideal, the unattainable lady of Proverbs,
no nothing so lofty do we find; but then we
are no match to such as she.
No, we are talking of the real women, the loving partners
the special ladies, who share the joys, the sorrows,
the day to day with us, beside us in the trials of life
that challenge us to be better than our nature,
to walk closer to thee Lord
who do give us greater standing by their efforts
by their good works, because it is true, the world
does see the good in us best, when they see the good in them
A man of faith with a wife in the congregation, active
in her walk, in her faith, good helpmate and wise mother
is a joy in the family, does give her husband
ample grounds for pride, for joy in the afterglow
the fruits of her labor, and standing in the gate
How lucky I am for such a fate, for such a soul
to share my days, my life bound to hers
Happy am I to call her wife, to hear her words
of love to me, echoed back instinctively, urgently
so she knows how I feel, how much I love her so
even if she falls short of that unattainable ideal
because she is so much more than that to me
