Pink Slides
I saw her for a split second
driving down Canal toward home
off to the left almost over my shoulder
Something didn’t fit
caught my eye,
even in peripheral vision
made me look again, shake my head
try to make sense of the look
the affect she was going for
It was the shoes
Her top was pink, nothing special
she worn grey flare jersey pants,
anything butCapri ,
scalloped and stitched at the bottom
in the old days, they would have been called sweats
that made sense, just a block down from Curves
but they weren’t matched to the top,
it was matched
to her pink strap slides
they were the thing that didn’t fit
made me look again
They may not have had spiked heels; but they were
shoes she would have worn out to cocktails last night
shoes for the club scene, not a stroll down on Canal
incongruous on the sidewalk
in the middle of the day
in the sunlight
visible for a moment
as she strutted down
toward the bridge

A Single Bird
An early morning drive
over the Merrimack
dark water from a lot of rain
a lone cormorant
down below the bridge above the dam
sending circles echoing out from its moving
a small creature it seemed from above
in the middle of the boiling water
stirred and darkened
by another storm

Flash of Joy – v2
February 2, 2004 11:44
Flash of Joy
– Written in reaction to the response to the poem “Into
Being”
by Roberta Woods –
“Love it! You've
captured the essence of writing not as a discipline but as joy. And it is because it is pure joy (the agony
comes later during revision) it is not a discipline in the sense of having
rigid edges. All doing from joy is a
gift to the doer as well as the recipient whether cooking, writing, gardening
or any other activity. My joy activities
are writing and carpentry. All the rest
require me to have discipline to get them done. –Roberta”

Into Being
– About the process of writing as merely writing down the
words, suggested by Roberta Woods earlier in the day. I see her point, based on
the way my writing often comes quickly. Even when I edit it as I write, it is
more to get it right/write. We had been talking about “one-book wonders” and
had segwayed into a discussion of how she writes daily and how, when she starts
writing a story, it often is prolific.

When the Evening Darkens
When the evening darkens
and the day cools
and the stars flicker to light
I sat on the blanket
with a smile on my face
listening to the band reminisce
not by their conversation,
but by their playing, singing, strumming
old songs, familiar tunes, we all knew
humming along in the wisp of the dusk
enjoying the stilling of the day
the murmuring and squeals of the children
running a bit slower now
on the lawn, in the dimming

Poetry Where You Live.
A Fourth Under Fire
We celebrate once again
the bravery of those certain men
who saw what they had to do
and though they were times
to try men’s souls
they hung the lantern
and answered the call
to defend the freedom they sought
and put pen to a new hope, a creed
to live in justice and trust
and fight for it we must
A land worthy of song
for banners and truths we hold dear
even when we become flawed or amiss
when we over extend and export
and fight for the wrong in court
A people, a thought,
a prayer in the maddening crowd
to save more than we harm
to live by our joint sacred text
to fight for the rights of all
open our heart to the down and the out
and give our neighbor his space
not force it in his face
and live simpler than some
so we can say in the end
that we honored our dream
and cared for the last and the least
to see ourselves in them
and treated them just
so those storied men of old
wouldn’t regret being so bold
as to put pen to page
creating a new land and place
where we could be as one
and live out our days
humbly and in peace

Fireworks
Rockets red glare
bombs bursting in air
oh and the eardrums
them too – bursting
A night of fire and foom
of shells that go boom
bright light and sudden arc
colors across the sky
flies in the light
of dusk to dark
and the rumble
of concussion
A spot on our blanket
to get the view
for a slice of pie
a la mode
to share a laugh or two
between the oohs and the ahhhs
Not to mention the OHHs
bombs bursting in air
oh and the eardrums
them too – bursting
A night of fire and foom
of shells that go boom
