Compromising Self

What do we have left, then
after compromising self,
even a little,
taking on the mantle, the anger
the argument of another
losing ourselves in the struggle
the moment of passion
of will asserting itself, pridefully
using skills for a purpose,
weakness
holding on too long
after instinct sets off alarms
believing too much,
we can overcome
hold together warring factions
warring parts within another self
straying from
not my will but Yours
even fitfully, a compromise
too great indeed
Reclaiming humility,
walking humbly
on this path
