Her Smiling Face

I think I will always remember
that picture, for the rest of my life
Her smiling face,
under the white mortarboard
finally ready, to step beyond
the school, her struggles,
to move forward into her future
with greater confidence,
more poise, rekindled energy,
because she stuck it out,
didn’t let them win,
and got the sheepskin
