The sinner, knowing himself,
chiding his fellow, speaking truth that day
the righteousness of their sentence
the judgment upon them
paying for their sin
according to the law
The Messiah, hanging beside them
holy and innocent,
carrying the sins of others
servant, slave, to the cross
His life for our own
our burden on his shoulders
giving his all, in submission to God
A truth for this night
sitting quiet in the sanctuary
that the pain he carried, the death
the life he gave was for me
That the thorns were my sin, my life
he bore to the cross
The nails were my stain, mine alone
We measure others, finding their fault
but the truth is that we each had our part
for without the savings, the price paid in blood
none of us would share in the fate of the thief
who would see Christ in paradise.
