The Granary

I met evil, coming inside
from the bright summer day
on the Vineyard, so long ago
His eyes full of hate
naked in the photograph
his tortured, twisted soul laid bare

What must it have been like
looking through the lens
the emulsion coming to dark life
in the quickening of the darkroom
So disconcerting, even on the glossy page
evil incarnate, looking right at me

The Granary
This poem is about my memory, of the jarring sensation
seeing a photograph circa 1994, of one of the all-time
great pictures, capturing evil, before it rose up to full flowering http://www.digitaljournalist.org/issue9911/icon02.htm,
of Joseph Goebbels,
on display at The Granary Gallery
on Martha’s Vineyard
taken by Alfred Eisenstaedt (1898 - 1995),
a master of black and white. Photojournalist of the century, http://www.digitaljournalist.org/issue9911/eisieintro.htm.
