The Humble Birth of Jesus

Though the Magi would come
inflated to be kings
the humble birth of Jesus
witnesses by lesser beings
The animals the first to see
the coming of our Savior
the lowly manger bed
cradled the Messiah’s head

The shepherd from the fields at night
dirty, bowing down
the strangers from a distant land
coming to pay homage
But the leaders, the people
were troubled at the news
preparing to kill the king
the one that had been foretold

The humble birth of Jesus
teaching us about God
his coming in quiet
not in fire on the mountain
in utter humbleness
to turn us from our misconceptions
the distortions of his law
to replace rules with compassion
sharing his love for all
