By the Master

By the master
by his touch
something so personal
lifting us up

Before he said the words
the bread, and the cup
sharing a washing
to change our world around

The master, a servant
our king a lowly slave
washing our feet
to prepare to send us out

Here in the upper room
staring at his head
kneeling before our feet
taught as we are led

To be his hands and feet
to share holy work
humble as a servant
to lift our neighbor up

Following Christ
his example on the earth
not for fame or fortune
but to lift our neighbors up
