The color of the flames

a thought of the sacrifice
written in his blood
the wine, the water
quenching of the punishment
judgment resolved
in the fire, the flame
coming to life
in the turning of the page
the story of a people
bound in covenant
protected by his sacrifice
brought back to life
fed by the fire
the Spirit’s flame
calling us to him
to a place with him again
healed of our punishment
living through the flames

“A Sign of Our Heritage”

A Sign of Our Heritage

The old, old boards
chipped, splintered
weathered white
fading to gray
the flame, the cross
the words of our welcome
calling our neighbors
into your house, Oh Lord
a sign of our heritage
of our bond to this place
hoping to see our neighbors
a smile upon their face
in the turning of the seasons
the leaves turning from green to red
our doors open, a community to be fed

seeing our faded sign
on the side of the main road in town
announcing our monthly community dinner
