A Word Shuddering Through Us

A word of judgment
convicting us, our daughter
a word shuddering through us
maybe not cancer
but a sentence none the less
a chronic illness coming to us
falling upon her
a judgment, changing
changing her life
our lives with her
now to be vigilant
conscious, away
a year ago today

the word, diabetes.
