A Moveable Fence

A row of children
waiting for the bus
early this cold morning
just warmer than frost

A mother taking
her kindergartener to school
returning as the bus would fill
waiting, that’s the rule

Most of them shorter
more her knee than her waist
a moveable fence boarding
the bus, marching in time

A happening all season
school now a habit
the children entranced, focused
barely seeing the adults around them
