Exposed Nerves

The masks, the layers
reverting to an earlier state
their comfort, their reason,
all of these peeled away

His face red, swearing
her words incoherent
with decibels rising
their baby’s clenched fists

Amygdala hijack
rising, in full flower;
no chance at compromise
for another two hours

As if on the savannah
hunted, as prey,
running from the lions
heart racing all day
