I heard Jesus’ words
my friend in the pulpit
someone I had known
all of my life
he rose to read scripture
but what was he saying
I know this man,
how could he claim Isaiah
that the prophecy was
fulfilled
in our hearing, this time
in this moment as we
heard it
read aloud by Jesus
our neighbor, known to us
how could this be,
fulfilled
we were hanging on every
word
all eyes upon him
what was he saying,
blasphemy
soon our hands upon him
