The cranberry shovel

the cranberry shovel
maybe twenty-four inches wide
led me down the walk
further and further
deeper and deeper
the blade gathering snow
as a duster to cobwebs
ready for the work
to clean the sidewalk;
but that was the beginning
the snow yet coming
deeper and deeper
just below freezing
the blade pushing
cutting through the snow.
I’m glad for the short handle
the weight of the confection
hard for the plow
the bite of the shovel,
lifting it somehow.
