children's message, by Pastor Ruth Foss, Stetson Memorial United Methodist Church, January 26, 2014

Good Morning. . . how are you all this morning? This morning I have a little quiz for you.  It is not a hard one because I am only going to ask you a question about the pictures I brought with me this morning.
OK. . .
1.  Is a coffee table alive. . . are they living things?  Well maybe at one time when they were trees they were alive but now they are not.
2.  Are frogs alive? Of course they are. We hear them at night making music and we see them hopping around. That is a silly question isn’t it?
3.  What about a car. . . is a car alive? They may seem to be now a days with how they talk and everything but they are not alive. . .
4.  How about a Daisy. . . are they alive? Well if they are silk flowers I would say no but if they are real flowers I would say yes.
5.  OK. . . this is a tough one. . . no PK’s can answer this question. . . is a bible a living thing? Well it is made of paper so some might think it is not alive but we know that the bible. . . the Word of God. . . is the Living Word of God. . .
6.  OK. . . last question. . . is God living? Again. . . no PK”S.  Yes your right. . . our God is alive.
There is a story in the bible about our living God. The story is found in 1 Kings. The people of that time worship the gods of the earth. . . the ones they made. A couple of them are Baal and Ashra. They were made of stone. Well, the people of Israel. . . God’s people. . . forgot about God and started to worship the god of the people around them.

Well one day a prophet name Elijah was called to help the people turn their ways back to God. . .
One day. . . he challenged the prophets of Baal to a challenge to see whose god really is god. So. . . they both sides made an altar and put a sacrifice on it. Now came the challenge. They had to call on Baal to rain down fire so that the altar wood on the altar would catch fire and burn the offering.

Elijah let the people of Baal go first. Well they called and called but no fire. Elijah was no help either. He kept taunting the Baal worshipers saying things like “yell louder maybe he can’t hear you. . . Maybe he’s taking a nap. . . and all sorts of things that made them even more upset than they already were.

Then came Elijah’s turn. . . to make it even more difficult he had water pour over the sacrifice. . . as a matter of fact there was so much water it filled the trench around it. Then Elijah prayed to God. . . God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel! Let it be known today you are the God of Israel. . . Answer me, O Lord, answer me, that this people may know you, O Lord, are God.”

Well. . . guess what happened. . . let them answer. . .  that’s right the fire came from heaven and not only burnt up the offering but also all the water in the trench around it. . . even the stones that altar was made from. . . That’s some hot fire. . .

A lot of people seem to be like those prophets of Baal. . . they make gods and idols for themselves out of their money. . . their house. . . their cars. . . these things can’t help them when they need help. . . they can’t answer when they call in times of trouble.

We have a living and breathing God who is always there for us. He answers us when we call. Our God is not dead. . . He surely alive. . .

Let’s pray. . .
