With our spit on Christ’s face – v7

Facing Jesus, my Savior,
Christ before me, the Messiah,
while both of us are dying
beside Him on my own cross
seeing my spit upon Him
His blood pouring out

The crown of thorns we fashioned
by our turning from our God
not merely the guards that held Him
our sins the nails that put Him
into the temple, onto the altar,
up on that rugged cross

Hearing first-hand the prayers of Jesus
the Psalms, the ancient words,
begging to God for mercy on me
through the pain, excursion,
the agony of crucifixion,
His prayers moaned out aloud

Breathing for forgiveness
for them, for each one of us,
while Christ was in pain
there on our cross
that God would forgive us
those persecuting the Christ

His blood, His life, . . .
our sin sacrifice
pouring out of Him
with my spit still upon Him
my curse, my derision, my ridicule
of the Christ, the Son of God

His prayer moaned out
a whisper, a murmur
a breath, moans,
calling out a petition
for forgiveness, for healing
for me on that cross
