we are to love as Christ loves

As we finish the Lenten journey
we follow the story of the week
leading us to Passover, to the cross
we read these words of scripture
during this Holy Week, again,
the familiar words, the truth,
in the telling of the story in John
the one who Jesus loved

Hearing the words in context
in the upper room, with the disciples
on that holy, on that terrible night,
knowing what He knew then
what Christ knew would happen
what was already set into motion

A new commandment spoken
by Jesus, by the Christ, after
after He had washed the feet of Judas
of Peter, of each of the disciples
who would fall asleep, who would betray
who would deny, who would desert him
these words of a new commandment
to love as he loved, to love as Christ loves

Knowing what would happen in the garden
in Jerusalem, on Golgotha, the place of the skull
we are to love as Christ loves us still
choosing the cross for us, for me, knowing
knowing all about us, about our sin, my rebellion
this is how we are called to love,
everyone, without exception
