sermon, We Are Sent, by Pastor Ruth Foss, Stetson Memorial United Methodist Church, Patten, ME, July 8, 2018

Psalm 123
Mark 6:1-13

We Are Sent…
Let Us Pray…
(Pay for the Spirits leading and for God to speak through me…)

Please stand for the reading of the Gospel according to Mark found in chapter 6 verses 1-13. Listen to and for the word of God for you and I who are sent in Jesus’ Name…

Good morning… Over the past few weeks we have been hearing about how God wants us to be with each other and with the world. We have talked about how we have a Good, Good Father who loves us with an unquenchable love…no matter what we do. It has nothing to do with us but everything to do with His grace. We can’t earn it…it just is.

We have also talked about how there are times that we, unfortunately don’t get along with our brothers and sisters. How it must break Dad’s heart when we decide to be divided instead of one body…We decide to stand divided instead of united.

We need to embrace the fact that there are people out there that are in need of a healing from the Master Physician and we are to be the ones to make that appointment for them. We are to bring them into the hospital for sinners and not decide they are beyond healing. No one and nothing is too beyond the healing power of Jesus…EVER. We are to be the hem of Jesus’ robe…that tangible thing that brings healing and wholeness…

In the Scripture from Mark this morning, we see two other principles that are in play as we go forth in Jesus’ Name…as we are sent out into the world…

1.There is a warning for us here…
“Just a Carpenter
1-2 He left there and returned to his hometown. His disciples came along. On the Sabbath, he gave a lecture in the meeting place. He made a real hit, impressing everyone. “We had no idea he was this good!” they said. “How did he get so wise all of a sudden, get such ability?”
But in the next breath they were cutting him down: “He’s just a carpenter—Mary’s boy. We’ve known him since he was a kid. We know his brothers, James, Justus, Jude, and Simon, and his sisters. Who does he think he is?” They tripped over what little they knew about him and fell, sprawling. And they never got any further.
4-6 Jesus told them, “A prophet has little honor in his hometown, among his relatives, on the streets he played in as a child.” Jesus wasn’t able to do much of anything there—he laid hands on a few sick people and healed them, that’s all. He couldn’t get over their stubbornness. He left and made a circuit of the other villages, teaching.”

As we are sent forth in Jesus’ Name we will come up against opposition. Especially if people THINK they know you. There will be those who don’t want to hear what you have to say. More than likely they like the way they are and don’t want you to change them… There will be those who second guess everything that you do because they can’t believe you are sent by Jesus…how could you ever be used by Jesus? There will be those who think they know you but all they know is the surface…not what you are really about. They haven’t really haven’t taken time to see the inside…what makes you tick. If they did…maybe they would have to eat their words…or maybe not. There those with their own agenda and if you don’t fit into it…if you are God’s possession and not man’s…you will have a problem.

Unfortunately for them…they are missing the blessing. Don’t give up. Don’t let them make you feel anything less than who God has called you to be. It is hard but believe in whom God says you are…He will correct those who are judging. Just smile and continue.

2. You will do great things for the Kingdom as you trust in God to equip you with EVRYTHING you need…
7-8 Jesus called the Twelve to him, and sent them out in pairs. He gave them authority and power to deal with the evil opposition. He sent them off with these instructions:
8-9 “Don’t think you need a lot of extra equipment for this. You are the equipment. No special appeals for funds. Keep it simple.
10 “And no luxury inns. Get a modest place and be content there until you leave.
11 “If you’re not welcomed, not listened to, quietly withdraw. Don’t make a scene. Shrug your shoulders and be on your way.”
12-13 Then they were on the road. They preached with joyful urgency that life can be radically different; right and left they sent the demons packing; they brought wellness to the sick, anointing their bodies, healing their spirits.”

No matter what others say…no matter what they think they know…no matter who they think you are…you are sent by God and there is nothing or no one that can stop it. You will do awesome things for God…Believe. You will always have what you need and some of your wants because God will provide…Believe.

We are sent out for God and we ARE worthy…we ARE equipped…and we ARE called. It doesn’t matter what others think who ay be against you. What matters is what God thinks because it is His agenda and not the worlds that you are sent to accomplish. You are given everything for the call…are you willing to go and make disciples of all nations…baptizing them in the Name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit…teaching them everything that the spirit has taught you…trusting that Jesus will be with you until the end of age? Are you?

Amen…
