Gone the ancient freedom

Gone the ancient freedom,

from your hills, your woodlands,

down to the mighty river

flowing to the sea…

who will protect Ukraina,

from the Moskals, their evil,

such is the misfortune

this lonely orphan girl…

the dark-haired maiden

cries among the poplars,

longing for the ancient glory,

freedom they once knew…

the verses now bitter,

chains upon us, heavy,

the loss of Kozak glory,

the forlorn maiden, Ukraina…
