Had she known

Oh, sorrow for the black-haired maiden,
her suitor now departed,
had she known,
so many questions
mysteries revealing,
sorrow unfolding,
captured asunder
for failing to ask questions
the mortal coil asking
requesting providence
a growing greater knowledge,
seeing the tragic future,
repeating the assertion,
had she known
the central question
in their union, in their parting…

knowing the prescribed future
what only could be expected
the truth they had detected
her sorrow manifest,
on his death, his departing,
He is gone now forever,
her world no longer singing
in the grove the poplars
where she is planted
by the witch she consulted,
so she would not have to marry
one not her lover,
so she would not tarry,
the potion hot and heavy,
the poplar growing
here across the sea…
