The Great Catastrophe

His words were his undoing,
speaking the truth against power
his love for Ukraine never wavered,
his spirit remained faithful
whether in prison, in confinement,
his focus never faltered,
all his days Shevchenko remained
a sufferer for the cause of Ukraine.
