Weeping at the cross

Was this how her life would end
the legacy of service
her abandoning her own dreams
becoming God’s handmaiden

Almost fifty, alone, widowed
standing, weeping at the cross
at the feet of Jesus

Her first-born dying
hanging on the tree,
scourged and spit upon
bleeding, in agony

Was this how her life would end
tragedy unfolding, unending
the Savior she had birthed into the world
hanging in agony,
dying as a martyr
