They thought they had the inside track
the pathway to God
disciples of the Holy One
the Holy One of God
They followed him
the Christ, the Messiah
yet now they were alone together
locked in the upper room

They were disciples of Jesus

Their lives had meaning
an identity holy
they were disciples of Jesus
in his ministry
All of that shattered
without meaning
waiting in the upper room
before Christ appeared

They followed a path of purpose

During Christ’s ministry
the disciple cohesive, focused
they followed a path of purpose
leaving their nets for other seas
fishing for men instead
Walking as Christ’s disciples
followers of his word
humble serving the Master
out in the world

Their story made sense

their narrative, their purpose
before the Passion week
their story made sense
something they could explain
to their families, the rest
why they had left their ships
their nets on the shores
following their Savior
hope evermore

Only confusion

Like the disciples
on Saturday, on Sunday
before they came to believe
before they saw the Christ
aimless, no purpose, only confusion
buffeted and bewildered
no rudder for my life

we search for a thread of purpose

harkening to their bewilderment
hidden in the upper room
before Christ’s appearing
we search for a thread of purpose
wishing Christ would appear
coming in to dwell with us
to guide us with a word

Where he had been beaten

The Gash in his side

The gash in his side
the holes in his hands
The holes in his hands
the tear in his side
enough to have killed him
to render him dead
the place where the nails held
his feet on the cross
all shown to us
by Christ in that room
our servant king and master
raised from the dead
Christ teaching once more

his hands and feet

simple signs of witness
that he is living

So we would believe

Christ appearing not for himself
he could have gone to the Father
coming into the locked room
letting us touch him
so we would believe
even through our fear
unable to read the signs
yet wanting to be with him
joy in his presence
hope evermore
Christ came to us
that we would be restored.

We have seen the risen Christ

We were gathered in
within the locked room
afraid, pensive
not knowing what to do
Christ came through the wall
through the locked door
breathing peace upon us
life evermore

We have seen the risen Christ
standing before us
sharing a meal
as when he was with us
alive, risen, yet in so ways spirit
God, yet fully human
overflowing with joy
life evermore

In the flesh before us

Breathing now,
thanks be to God
Christ coming to us
in our hour of need
Through the wall
seemingly as a ghost
yet in the flesh before us
sharing our meal

Christ is alive, risen

Christ was alive, risen
gathered here with us
he walked through the wall
but he was clearly human
We were afraid,

Why are you so troubled

Christ before them
walking through the wall
the room closed, locked
for fear of the Jews
Their Master killed
the Messiah before them
they had run, they had hid
behind the locked door
His word incredible
they were incredulous
why are you so troubled
where should they start
Christ before them
walking through the wall
their Master in the upper room
risen, alive in their midst

A prayer for God’s presence

Guide me Jesus
come beside me
as you did on that ancient road
on the way to Emmaus
Be with me Spirit
burn like fire within me
quench all fear
lead me to life
Hold me, Lord, my Potter
Creator, immortal

No one who true has changed
who has repented of their sin
no one who lives in Christ
keeps sinning in their walk

by the indwelling Spirit
