Nightfall – v3

Fiery sun hides below the shore,

Summer sky aglow.

Nightfall resting on the water.

I pull and push

The canoe away from the water’s edge.

Longing for warmth, the last embers.

Great blue heron

Perched on a skeleton

Of an ancient pine,

Silhouetted on an

Oriole sky.

Still skin of my lake

Ablaze in orange, yellow, and black.

Waves swell and collapse.

The canoe pitched and bobbed.

The paddle blade leaves

Bright eddies sparkle on my right.

Silently going across the silken waters

Colored lights on a deck

Elvis on the stereo

Easy laughter from an invisible porch.

Failing light, all in shadows.

Dark houses, silent waters

A beaver before me.

He slaps his tail and dives

Shallow near shore.

We cross again,

Repeating this dance.

A light from my window,

My cabin in the lake,

Guides me home.

Night all around me

The world is at peace.
