In the garden, Gethsemane
after the supper, the Passover,
the betrayal by Judas,
death stalking the night,
After the breaking of the bread
the sharing of the wine
A different cup waiting
there in the garden
more than sacrifice
waiting for Him
the bitter cup of our vomit
of the bile of all our Sin
The Lord praying
His tears like blood
the awesome moment,
understanding more deeply his cry,
“Please take this cup from me;
but not my will but Yours be done.”
His humanity, for a moment
rising in panic, to turn from His path;
returning, submissive, fulfilling
Christ the Servant, the lamb
putting that awful cup to His lips
for all humanity
There in the garden, Gethsemane
taking on the weight of our sin
for all since the beginning of time;
the die cast, fulfilled,
all that was written,
all now leading to Calvary.
