The Smell of the Burning Palms – v4

Still fresh in my memory,
so thick I can taste this,
the smell of the burning palms;
the smoke thick, wrapping round me
our hallelujahs becoming ashes
as our joy was burned away.

The ashes gray, silent before us,
sitting on the altar waiting for us
to join us with the dust;
these somber moments,
praying deeply, listening to the words,
marking us with Christ’s sacrifice.
