Silently mouthing
a message to me
“Nice Tie”
‘till I got it
If only he knew
$3 for $10 from the pushcart
at Downtown Crossing.
But right for the mood
of the Quarter
where it began
and grew and grew
Back to the roots
He came
And I did too
to bleed, to be filled
To feel the swell
the rhythm,
the Beat, through me.
I left with a smile
and a knowing
I would always remember
and return (when I could)
to dip into the well
to sit on the floor again
But without my $3 tie.

“Toots Sweet’s Band” in the movie
Angel Heart (1987).
I gave him my tie, right off my neck
(a tie I had bought from a pushcart at
Downtown Crossing in Boston).

The members of Los Lobos were near me, watching as I was.
I saw the wedding couple riding in a carriage
in the French Quarter that night.
