Crushing the ground cover underfoot

Crushing the ground cover underfoot,
an overwhelming scent memory,
instantly brought back over fifty years ago,
in my grandparents’ back yard.

The smell of the plants, the vines,
crushed under the tires, underfoot,
a branch needing to be dispatched,
beside where they were growing…

I could instantly picture their yard,
playing hide and seek with my cousins,
joyful memories of love, family,
in their living, verdant, backyard…
