Hope”
Psalm 25:1-9

“Extended Hope…”
The Lord be with you…let us pray… (prayer
for the Spirit’s indwelling as bring God’s words of hope this morning…)
Please stand for the reading of the Gospel
according to St. Luke, chapter 10, verses 25-37. Listen to words of caution
from God to the people of God as we seek His will…
As the three believers sat
together to have conversation and laughter with each other over some fresh
baked cookies, there was a knock on the door. As Ms. L. got up to answer the
door there was almost an air of despair in the room. When Ms. L. opened the
door, she found Justice standing their looking as if she had just run a country
mile. “Why Justice, you are all sweaty and out of breath. Come in child and
tell us what’s wrong,” Ms. L. said to a grateful friend. “Thanks, so much L. I
just came from a special meeting at the church and things are going off the
beaten path, so to speak.” Justice said as she tried to catch her breath.
Just then Hope and
Patience came around the corner. “Hey Patience, I didn’t know you were here.
Who’s your friend?” Justice asked kind of suspiciously. “Hi Justice. This is my
new friend Hope. She is a new or should I say renewed believer and we were just
getting to know each other. She has all kind of questions that Ms. L. thought I
could help her with,” Patience answered. “Hi Hope, I am Justice. Sorry about me
running in like this but it is horrible over at the church. There’s going to be
a break in the church. They are arguing over something and I think they have
come to an impasse. That is why I came to get you. We need your love and
guidance Ms. Lovejoy. We need it bad.”
“Well land sakes what
could they be arguing over that would cause such a ruckus?” Ms. L. asked. “Well
you know that group of people that wanted to use our church for their meeting?”
“Yes, the group that wanted to use it to teach childcare to those single young
moms’.” Ms. L. answered almost fearfully. “Well, some are saying to not let
those people in…they say that they got themselves into it so they should figure
it all out on their own. And others are saying we need to help them because our
future generation depends on it and that they are the “least of these” we
should reach out to.” Justice said with anger in their eyes.
“So what side are you on?”
Ms. L. asked almost as if she already knew the answer. “Look, these girls did
this to their self. Why should we help bail them out? They should have their
children taken away from them if they can’t care for them. They should of
thought about that before they got themselves pregnant.” Justice said with
pride in her voice. “Are you kidding me. This is a joke, right? Your name is
Justice and you can’t see the injustice of not helping them? As far as I can
remember Jesus helped those who were not perfect…not the perfect. What kind of
Christian are you?” Hope asked very discouraged. “One with morals. Who are you
anyway? Who do you think you are to judge me? I’m not the “newbie” you are and
as such you have a lot to learn about being Christian.” Justice exclaimed.
“Alright girls. That’s enough! We have other pressing matters down at the
church. Let’s get down there to try and help.” Ms. L. declared. “Yah, you go
there. I would just as soon go home and try to make sense of all this fighting
and Christian stuff” Hope replied. “Maybe I’ll see you later Patience. It was
nice seeing you Ms. L.”
“Oh honey don’t leave like
this” Ms. L. called after her. “Awe, just let her go L. She probably would have
left the church after she got what she wanted out of us any way.” Justice
declared. “Justice! What is wrong with you?! I am going after her. Ms. L. I
will talk with you later. Justice you really need to get a grip.” Patience
shouted over her shoulder as she ran after Hope. “Hope wait up, I want to talk
with you.” Patience shouted as she ran after Hope…hoping she could fix the
damage that was caused by Justice’s remarks. “When is that girl ever going to
learn what WWJD really means and how to live it out.” She thought as she raced
after Hope feeling a little hopeless…
In
what do you find hope? It can be hard to find it in the world we live in. There
is an aura of hopelessness and despair around us. How can we keep our hope as
we are surrounded by such a heavy force? Well, hope needs to be cultivated in
our lives. And not only that, we are called to have more than enough so that we
can share with others. Now…I’m going to tell you something that may shock
you…hope doesn’t happen overnight, it’s a process that you go through your
whole life until you and I are called home… But as we begin to have a living
hope in us, a light is turned on in our lives, a bright light. But …how do we
hold on to this hope we have?
Over
the past few weeks, we have been farming…so to speak. To recap…we have plowed
the fields and germinated seeds. They sprouted and we have planted them in the
good and cultivated soil, that is sustained by God and His word…the seedlings hopefully
have taken root and has gone deep down into the ground and watered by the
Living Water. Remember, if the seedling…if
hope is not planted, there is no grounding…no growth. It is shallow and when
trials of life some scorching in it is dried up and withers… The only
way to withstand the pressures of life our hope has root itself in good soil
where it receives water…Living Water.
We
have tilled the soil so that the seeds
of love and hope could begin to grow and sprout new hope within us and within
those who Go calls us to plant within. Now, there are times that we may even
want to move on because of …fill in the
blank. But…God says, not just yet…you need to stay put where you are. So, what
do we do? We bloom where we are planted. The fruits are shared within our
community of the church and out into the larger community of the world. Hope
becomes evident in our lives and the lives of others… (If it isn’t evident…is there really any hope to be found?)
We
may become weary at times…you can’t just
keep putting out and not run out. We become tired, discouraged, exhausted,
and disappointed. And how do we become nourished again? Give time to answer? We need to revive ourselves with the word of
God…go to the well that will give us rest and rejuvenate us to continue. We
also are to help others revive as well… And we also remember all those victories we have had in and through
Jesus…that’s what keeps us going forward and hold on to the hope within us. We
are living in a building site as we build hope within ourselves and within
others. But one of the key facts of growing in hope is making room…letting go
of the past in ourselves and in others…laying down those things that are taking
up room in our lives that don’t belong there…so that we can all have room for
hope…
So here we are at the end of this journey with
Hope. It has been a good one that made us think and rethink about the hope
within us. Now, it’s time to go forward with this “Living Hope”, as we live our
lives with hope. Wait! As we go forward with Hope there’s one thing more we
must remember to do! That is to “Extend Hope” to others. How do you think we do
that? Give time to answer. We need to extend that hope not just with our
friends and family but with others…even if they are different.
“When he finally arrives, blazing in beauty and all his
angels with him, the Son of Man will take his place on his glorious throne.
Then all the nations will be arranged before him and he will sort the people
out, much as a shepherd sorts out sheep and goats, putting sheep to his right
and goats to his left.”
Today is World Communion Sunday. A day when we
celebrate the communion we have with one another. This is a day that we
remember that we are all invited to the table of grace, there is room at the
table of hope found in the upper-room. This
is a day that we celebrate our differences and realize that we are one family. I’m
not talking about just Christ Followers…no it is a much larger view point. I am
talking about all of humanity. Today we realize the universal and
inclusiveness of the church…or should I say what the church should be…
Unfortunately, we, at times, find ourselves being more exclusive than
inclusive. We keep the hope to “our own” … But that is not what we are
called to be and do.
“Then
the King will say to those on his right, ‘Enter, you who are blessed by my
Father! Take what’s coming to you in this kingdom. It’s been ready for you
since the world’s foundation. And here’s why:
I
was hungry and you fed me,
I was thirsty and you gave me a drink,
I was homeless and you gave me a room,
I was shivering and you gave me clothes,
I was sick and you stopped to visit,
I was in prison and you came to me.’

In the scripture I have read this morning, we hear
this bright, young religious scholar. Now this man knew the Law of Moses. But
her was looking for a loophole. This young man wanted to be able to pick and
choose those that he would associate with and consider his equal. But, Jesus,
as always, had a different “eye sight” than that of the world. These people
were from the temple, religious men. But they lacked one thing, compassion for
others…not just those who were of the “elite” as they were but true compassion
for their fellow man…or woman. That seems to be the state of many churches.
Not wanting to touch those who are different, not to associate with one of
those, not wanting to bind the wounds of the least of these…
“Then
those ‘sheep’ are going to say, ‘Master, what are you talking about? When did
we ever see you hungry and feed you, thirsty and give you a drink? And when did
we ever see you sick or in prison and come to you?’ Then the King will say,
‘I’m telling the solemn truth: Whenever you did one of these things to someone
overlooked or ignored, that was me—you did it to me.’
What happens
when we extend hope to others? Give time to answer. We end up giving
hope to others. The person who was left on the side of the road to die, he had
no hope at all and his situation got even more hopeless as the others walked
by. But all of the sudden there was a shadow that came across his face as
someone actually stopped to help him. Now it doesn’t tell us this man is but it
tells us it was a Sarmatian that stopped to help him. Now the Samaritan’s
were considered low life people that just didn’t fit into society. They were once
“Jews” but they didn’t agree upon where to worship God so they split from their
country men and women and became their own people. (Sound familiar…?) I
think that the point of this is that we are no better than our fellow human and
we need to look out for each other and give hope to one another. However, that
may look.
“Then
he will turn to the ‘goats,’ the ones on his left, and say, ‘Get out, worthless
goats! You’re good for nothing but the fires of hell. And why? Because—
I was hungry and you gave
me no meal,
I was thirsty and you gave me no drink,
I was homeless and you gave me no bed,
I was shivering and you gave me no clothes,
Sick and in prison, and you never visited.’

“Then those ‘goats’ are
going to say, ‘Master, what are you talking about? When did we ever see you
hungry or thirsty or homeless or shivering or sick or in prison and didn’t
help?’
Today
is World Communion Sunday. It is a day we celebrate our oneness as Christ
Followers and as humanity. It is a day
that we remember the hope we have in our God and within each other. It is a day
that we may think about those who are excluded from society and maybe even
think of ways to include them…to take care of them…to give them the hope within
a hopeless world. You know, many times, when I come into this sanctuary, I look
up at the banners and see (read the two
banners). And I think to myself, “Do we really believe and live out what is
written in our statement…our mission statement on the wall?” Maybe we need to
think about it a little. Do you and I
understand and believe in what we say, let alone in the promises of God?
Maybe that is something we need to look at as we go forth with hope on our
wings to share with others. The alternative is not too enticing…
“He
will answer them, ‘I’m telling the solemn truth: Whenever you failed to do one
of these things to someone who was being overlooked or ignored, that was me—you
failed to do it to me.’
We
are works in progress and in being… such, we have room for improvement and
growth…expansion...maybe even a whole renovation project. But know this…there is hope, to be found by you and me.
Where there is hope…there is possibilities…
“Then
those ‘goats’ will be herded to their eternal doom, but the ‘sheep’ to their
eternal reward.”
