“Ba Ba Black Sheep…”

Prayer of illumination….

Please stand for the reading of the Gospel according to John, 10th chapter, verses 1-21…listen to the voice of God speaking to the sheep of His pasture…

I went to an agricultural school for high school. My major was large animal science. They had a farm there and a dairy processing plant so I could interact and practice the things I learned in class. I think my favorite animal on the farm…and still is…is the sheep. They were so cute and trusting. But it was difficult to get them to follow me. I would call them and they would just look at me like I was crazy. But when our teacher called them they came running. Why was it so different for me?

I got the answer to that question when we were able to pick out a sheep and work with them to get them ready for us to show at the fair. There was no way my sheep would listen to me in the beginning. But little by little…day by day…it got so much easier. It got to the point that all my sheep needed was to see me and she would come running.

Life can be a lot like that. We try to hear and understand what we are to be and do in life and it is difficult. There is so many voices in the world it can be hard to clearly hear the truth…the voice that knows our path. We search for security…something to trust… Unfortunately there are times when we trust the wrong people…listen to the wrong voice…and wind up dazed and confused, not knowing who to follow…

We are on a Lenten pilgrimage to the cross. This season is a time of retrospect as we look at our lives and see if there are things that are getting in the way of our relationship with God. We are on a road to the heart of God trying to find what may be missing as we find the key to filling the God shape hole in our lives.

As we share this Lenten journey with one another, I would like to invite all of you on a journey to the heart of the matter…finding that perfectly, God shaped thing we are missing. I would like to invite you to a time of looking at what will fill that hole so that we can help others find their way to the place of turning around so that they too will be on the road to God’s own heart. Let’s look at what we really need as we look for the love that will satisfy our souls.

We started our journey on Ash Wednesday as we decided that yes, we have that God shaped hole and yes at times we look for other things to fill that hole only to find ourselves empty and frustrated. We are looking for a resistor…we discovered that Jesus is the resistor or should I say resist-or. Instead of giving into what the tempter was offering, Jesus demonstrates for us that it is in the resistance to evil that we find our true communion to God…that we find the road to the Lover of our souls. It is within the resistance of evil that we begin the journey back to God.

We are looking for a helper…we know that we need a helper…a Savoir to Guide us…to help us find our way. Jesus is that Savior that we need. Otherwise there is still that deep cavern…that big hole in the ground between God and ourselves. When Jesus stretched His arms across the cross He bridged that gap between God and humanity…only He can do that. And when we thirst for a rain to fall upon our parched soul. Jesus is the only true Thirst Quencher. What else will satisfy that longing…fill that God shaped hole?

The Scripture I read from John this morning talks about a voice that will never let us down…there is a voice that leads in the paths of righteousness…as our Psalm told us this morning. The Pharisees were speaking out of their own voice…the voice of the world and the people were following their voice. They were all about the rules and regulations. Jesus came and told them…showed the…a different way. They just wouldn’t listen…they too were under the wo of the siren voice of the world.

The voice of the world…When I was a little girl we used to play a game called telephone. We would sit in a circle. As we sat there, someone would whisper something into some one’s ear and they would pass it on. This would happen until you reached to the last person. When it was their turn they would say aloud what they heard. It was so funny to hear how the original would change. You can only imagine what the last person heard… Why was it so different in the end? It was distorted from the original.

Life can be very much of the way. We think we heard something clearly but what we perceived…what we understood…was distorted from the original. This is not just an issue with the world but it is an issue within the Christian faith. There are times that we think we understand and hear from God but it ends up being just the howl of the winds of the world. The only solution to this hearing difficulty is to use our hearing aid…the Word of God…it alone will help us hear and know the voice of the shepherd…it alone is what tunes our spiritual ears into the voice of Truth.

In the world, there are many voices and many images that try to attract us to their glitz and glimmer. We can tend to look at the outside to find our security. The latest fad…the newest gadget…the bright new shiny car or home. But that is not really where we find our security. Underneath all that glitter and shine is a hollowness that resounds in our hearts.

The prophet Samuel had that same issue when he was looking to anoint a king for Israel…David was that King. Let me read to you his account with Jesse…David’s father. Read the scripture from Samuel 16:1-13 NIV Bible.

The people wanted to have security and they thought that having a king…a power figure…would give them that security. They wanted to have someone come and fix things for them much like we do at times and even Samuel was looking for that king in the wrong place…he was looking at the outside and not the inside…How apropos is it that this famous figure…this defender of the people…was a shepherd…much like Jesus who is the Good Shepherd…

Jesus…our Good Shepherd…was not what the Pharisees were looking for. They were looking for a different kind of savior and Jesus didn’t fit the bill. To them He was a trouble maker and a rule bender. How could this rabble-rouser be God’s Savior…unfortunately…many people of the Jewish faith are still looking for that Savior…they…like Samuel…had blinders on and could not see the Holy One of Israel standing right in front of them…

The definition of a shepherd is:
watch over like a shepherd, as a teacher of her pupils
a clergyman who watches over a group of people
tend as a shepherd, as of sheep or goats
sheepherder: a herder of sheep (on an open range); someone who keeps the sheep together in a flock.

Jesus…our Shepherd…lays down His life for the sheep of His pasture. Jesus laid down his life for the “sheep” of God’s pasture. He took our sin in order for us to enter the green pasture that gives us new life. This shepherd knows His sheep. Jesus knows us…His sheep. We have a shepherd that watches over us and when we cry…when we bleat…in pain and sorrow… in fear, He hears us and is right there to save His sheep. He gathers in his sheep. Jesus gathers us in…His sheep…together so that we may be one flock, not divided like sheep and goats. (Jesus is a…is the…Good Shepherd).

There is healing and salvation found in the name of Jesus…in the name of the Good Shepherd. The words healing and salvation come from the Greek word sothenai (sow-than-a-i) which means to be saved and made whole. There is physical healing for the body and a spiritual healing for everyone who calls on the name of the Good Shepherd. We are made whole…we are made one with and in God and each other. When we are one there is peace. We…the black sheep…are washed clean as snow.

We are called to follow the True Shepherd…the one who wants us to have a new life, restored and forgiven. We are called to know the Shepherd who calls us out of the darkness and into the light of His pasture. We are called to obey the True Shepherd who asks us to help Him find the lost sheep and to bring them into the sheepfold of His love, His mercy, His grace and forgiveness. We are called to be mirror images of the Shepherd. Kind of like apprentices to the Shepherd…learning from Him and going out to practice what we have learned…

So…are there and “black sheep” that you know who may need a good washing? Is there anyone you know who is trying to play the game telephone with the world and needs to hear the voice of Truth? How about you…are you looking for a way or the Way Maker? Come to the font and be washed white as snow…come to the foot of the cross and be healed...came and sit at the feet of the Shepherd and hear His words of love and grace…come to the open arms of the healer and just be held.

Amen
