Acrid,
tasting it, palpable, burning,
filling
my lungs, my spirit;
The
smoke, the fire,
still
fresh in my memory;
How
quickly they burn, they burned;
The
smell of the burning palms
the
smoke thick, wrapping round me
as
our joy burned away
The
ashes gray, thick before us;
A
presence, this humble offering
sitting
on the altar, waiting for us;
Praying
deeply, listening to the words,
reminding
us of Christ’s sacrifice -
His
life in this world.
