A hint of God’s presence

Something in these words
never seen before
the hand of the Father
in the scheme unfolding
the decision of the leaders
to sacrifice the Savior
the healing that he would bring
in quelling rebellion
yet loosing God’s plan
his forgiveness, his grace
healing the nation
a hint of God’s presence
in the high priest’s prophecy
the death of the Christ
coming from heaven
to bring us to God

A sacrifice for All

perhaps unwittingly
for their own evil purpose
yet something divine
fulfilling Christ’s calling
a sacrifice for all
one for the nation
healing the breach
formed at creation
the Savior dying
to set us free
the leaders scheming
but God’s plan unfolding
in the sacrifice of Christ
his death on the tree
bringing us back to him
for all eternity

was their plot to kill him
judging the Son of Man
something God directed
the chief priest of his people
prophesying Christ’s death

Out of their evil

looking deeper
the richness of this language
watching for the signs
of God’s hands upon them
in some way divine
the plot to kill Jesus
a reason, a purpose
a part of God’s plan
Out of their evil
perhaps unwittingly
instruments of the creator
their hands scheming
but holding them up
sacrificing our Savior
to heal the whole world

heavy with child
traveling because they had to

in the Jordan singing
crying out for all of us
to come and be washed
to repent of our sins
rejoicing for his coming
the coming of the King
the one long foretold

Not the tinsel, the glitter
the presents, the parties
much to celebrate
if we truly believe

Christ is coming
the babe in the manger
the risen Lord and Savior
come to heal the earth

We should be singing
shouting out loud
we should be sharing
our joy that profound

God in his mercy
sending us his Son
redeeming us from ourselves
the battle already won

With the song of Mary
the exhortations of John
we should be another
who was rejoicing to God
Christ, our master
come to save the earth
the one long foretold
to come and give new birth
We are witnesses
to others on earth
sent to spread his message
all around this globe
to be his light, his message
to servants here and now
offering up our witness
our shoulders to the plow

Think about this moment
when Christ came to earth
fulfilling all prophecy
bringing new life to earth
all we are redeemed
if we will believe
recapturing God’s peace

People in waiting
in joyful promise
people of hope
sure of our Savior
of his return to the earth
singing with Mary
the song of praises
offering our witness
as did John the Baptist
of our need to change
to turn our lives toward him

preparing hearts, made ready

over flowing with joy

What is in the way
if we are Advent people
why aren’t we
over flowing with joy
this time, this season
aware of his coming
believing he will come again
knowing our loving Savior
became the Son of Man
coming here to save us
to redeem us from our sin
giving us a loving example
showing us how to live
we should be sharing
shining his light for all
sharing his message richly
to all the people on earth
over flowing with our joy
our cups, our lives running over
our vessels filled with God’s love
needing to be poured out

We know he will come again

Not just a promise
something deeper within
somehow knowing, confident
all will be fulfilled

We know he will come again
the living, risen Christ
come to judge the whole world
to open paradise

We must be awake, sharing
offering his love to all
we must be active, not silent
that joy may abound

We are his hands and feet
his voice here in this life
we are to sow our seeds
his love over the earth

hope of his return – v2

nothing so much
our confidence in Christ
his promises fulfilled
down to the last one
hope of his return
sure in our hearts
in God’s time only
coming in love
returning in triumph
to bring us to him
to gather all those
who believe, who witness
who follow his command
offering witness
sharing grace richly
to the ends of the earth

a life of Advent – v2

Our joy, our peace
hope in the Lord
waiting, alive, awake
knowing he will return
returning to earth some day
a life of Advent
focused on the Christ
bearing his light
all of our lives
sharing with others
our faith, our witness
being the voice crying out
prepare the way for the Lord
make straight the paths
preparing hearts for God
for the harvest to come

The tickle of its needles

My feet, cold from the water
slogging through the marshes
the reeds, the meadow
rising into the arbor
the cold closing around us
the nursery overgrown
thick with bramble, whispers
echoes of other falls
families in mischief

The tickle of its needles
against my bristled cheek
our prized new possession
the tree for the living room
hefted on my back, slung
so like scenes of A Christmas Carol
Tiny Tim upon my shoulder
wishes of a happy Christmas

In this Advent
seeking time set apart
focused on the meaning
the coming of the Christ
Seeking that peaceful place
a centering of life
heralding our Savior
the coming of the light
His coming once more
his return from heaven
not as a humble baby
but in victory, in love

In this desert
this arid place
a pathway for God
every spirit open
Kings brought low
those who are exalted
the lowly raised up
every valley made smooth
every heart made ready
all made fertile ground
voices crying out
