April Violet

A new bloom
frilly and pink
between the rich and green
grafted and grown by your hands
warmed in the sun
given to me
gone but remembered
preserved in resin,
and memory

6/4/04 20:50 – About a special new breed of violet that my paternal grandmother, Jessie Foss, gave me when I was a pre-teen. I preserved the bloom in resin, which cracked because of the moisture in it.

Bar

Reexamination of law
Forgotten,
Pulling tendrils of memory
to the front
to be ready
to answer the test

New law
Bar Prep
Paths not taken
requiring more work
new learning
on video

Application
Memory test
Of factoids
of my life
over time
and in detail

Wait
Not ready
Courses/ assignments undone
before the end
before I’m ready
to sprint to the finish

Strand

A glint of gossamer
Single strand,
Bowed in the wind
Tethered to branch and bench
Undulating, snapping
Refracting when still
A line, catching the eye
Breaking the scene
Like a cracked window
Bending in the breeze

Gage

Little man
Newly five years old
Devil in your blue eyes,
Sly smile and infectious laugh
Sharing candy with me,
But not too many,
Made me happy
Made me laugh.

Watching you grow
Playing demolition derby
Or kickball with you and
Your shorts, tank top, and winter boots

How I see your dad and mom
In you and your sister
Friend and tormentor
Each to the other
Happy playing together
And testing the other –
Punch, hug, kick, and laugh.
Hey, Can I have some gum?!?

Diana

Perched and posed
for viewing
in your shop
smooth and feminine
cool metal and shine

Bow and breast
subtle calf
command the room
draw the eye
from Lincoln and
coin

Anniversary

An anniversary
Of a moment
(if many hours can be but a moment)
When pain brought a common numbing
A shock, pride, and resolve
Smoking buildings
Bombed caves
A world away

Fifth-five year before
In the midst of Pearl Harbor,
A prescient son of Nippon postulated -
A sleeping bear awoked
By a sudden attack,
Again from the air
That forever changed our innocence
The fallibility of our sense
Of safety within our shores
That danger is out there, over there, not here
By hostile hands.

Like squabbling siblings
United against the town’s bully
Who chose one of their own
A nation together
Rallying ‘round the flag
Terrorists beware
We will not forget this anniversary
And you don’t deserve flowers.
Unless you want lilies.

Accrue

To accrue, or not to accrue
That is the question,
Whether to recognize the income
The deduction, now,
Or on receipt, payment,
Or rather cash
Constructive or otherwise
Falls to my ledger
Enriching me
In Year 1 or 2
