The people rising
using the modern media
voices rising
demanding the same freedoms
The nations together
the despots to be toppled
the dominoes lined up
each of them falling
Prayers for the people
caught up in the moments
the ground shifting
rapidly, complete
The world changing
while we are all watching
may we stand with the people
while the despots fall

An End of the Time of Tyrants
Would it be really true
that the dominoes were falling
that we were witnessing
an end of the time of tyrants
that the world was seeing
experiencing in real-time
one of the greatest changes
in the history of mankind
that the people were rising
speaking together
throwing off the shackles
the chains of their days
that repressions was yielding
to the power of the people
that the world would never again
grovel at their feet
The tyrants toppled
sent into exile
running away
jubilation in the streets
that the people would dance
sing victorious
that peaceful revolution
was loose in the world

Not to Abolish
We need to remember
when we grasp hold of Grace
that Christ came to fulfill
the law and the prophets
to be the example
the promise of God
come to life on earth
Not to abolish
to render the law
meaningless, dead
not at all
He came to complete
to give example to the Word
the scripture come alive
every single word

To Complete the Law
To fulfill, the law, the prophets
to complete the law
with the grace of God
love come down
offering salvation
in the humbleness of Christ
being the salt of the earth
Authentic and common
walking here with us
giving up power
submitting to God
offering hope
in his teaching, healing
an example for us all
that we may find life
Following the Christ
the commandments of God
the law and prophets
showing us how to live
walking humble
with our God
loving our neighbors
as we would want them
how we would be treated ourselves
A light to the nations
carrying Jesus
to love the Messiah
offered on the cross
the cup of our pardon
in his sacrifice
the love of God so great
we may see paradise

The Ground Shifting
Something dramatic
across the world
people rising with one voice
that their voice will be heard
The ground shifting in real-time
under the despots feet
leading to freedom
until the world is free
The tyrants must pack their bags
the people will not be silent
we need to join with the people
protesting for their freedom
The world becoming smaller
media alive
sharing the struggle in real-time
all around the world

Our Task Now
To be the ones to care
to set the prisoners free
hope for the helpless
a balm for those in pain
We are to be Christ
our task now
to be servants as he was
being the salt of the earth
In our humility grace
in our love healing
offering Christ to the world
shining his light in the darkness
Talking of our faith
how he set us free
truth will open the shackles
to set the whole world free

Answering the Challenge of Christ
The words of the prophets
the Law fulfilled in Christ
all of God’s promise
come alive for us
going the way of the cross
Answering the challenge of Christ
being his hands and feet
going out into the world
offering hope to the captives
setting the prisoners free
Being salt of the earth
never putting on air
remaining humble
loving to our neighbors
being the light to the world

The Echo of the Prophets
The words of Isaiah
the each of the prophets
fulfilling the law of Moses
in the coming of our Savior
Showing us what it is
to truly love our neighbors
bearing witness to God’s love
his healing of the nations
Salt of the earth
common as the fishermen
yet we are called to be his messengers
the hands and feet of Christ
Bearing our witness ever
how God saved our lives
loving our neighbors
to the ends of the earth
No one is special
all of us with feet of clay
yet God in his mercy
takes our sins away
Freeing us from our bondage
the chains of our sin
redeeming us completely
that we may truly live

the each of the prophets
fulfilling the law of Moses
in the coming of our Savior
Showing us what it is
to truly love our neighbors
bearing witness to God’s love
his healing of the nations
Salt of the earth
common as the fishermen
yet we are called to be his messengers
the hands and feet of Christ
Bearing our witness ever
how God saved our lives
loving our neighbors
to the ends of the earth
No one is special
all of us with feet of clay
yet God in his mercy
takes our sins away
Freeing us from our bondage
the chains of our sin
redeeming us completely
that we may truly live

The Yoke Removed
The world shall be free
the yoke removed
when we have carried the light
as we are called
to the ends of the earth
When the blind see
the oppressed set free
when we truly love our neighbor
bearing the name of Christ
shining light in the darkness
sharing the grace of God
the healing of our Savior

Let the Oppressed Go Free
Christ came to save us
to let the oppressed go free
but we cannot be silent
because of Calvary
The grace he gave us
the gift of life
we are to be light
into the dark night
To give hope to all people
sharing the gifts from God
His love for each of us
to forgive us of our sin
To set the captives free
to break the yoke we carry
to free us to love our neighbor
our sisters and our brothers
To loose the bonds of injustice
our voices rising
the light we carry
to set the whole world free

Break Every Yoke
The oppressed to go free
in the love of the Lord
the hope the nations
the light to restore
God’s grace unending
the love sublime
raining down from heaven
into your heart and mine
When we call he answers
hearing our prayer
water in the deserts
nothing can compare
God here with us
living in our hearts
raising up the nations
your word beating in our hearts

Share Our Bread
Ours to be servants
to offer hope
to share our bread with others
to the ends of the earth
Yet not just with flour
the bread we share
the hope of the nations
we find it here
In the body of Christ
the light we carry
the bread of life
on the altar of the cross

Your Light Shall Break Forth Like the Dawn
Our light exposed
put up on the lampstand
shining in the darkness
the hope of all mankind
Christ in that light
his grace a wellspring
God’s love pouring down
raining from heaven

breaking forth like the dawn
the night receding
the darkness is gone

My Defense
My defense, my refuge
the fortress around my life
my hope in my struggle
the strength in my life
You alone Lord
have watched me in the breach
protected me in my struggles
the source of all relief
Stay with me my Savior
whatever may come
be right beside me
until my work here is done

With What I Need
Standing in the battle
before the giant
cursing me, my Lord
denying the God of heaven
Standing with my gifts
with what I need
to defeat the enemy
Standing in the breach
in the wilderness
bearing his light
as a child
of Christ’s victory
sure of our salvation
by his amazing grace
able to face the giant
in this life on earth

Walk in His Ways - 2
To live, life everlasting
follow God’s commands
His law always
Walk in His ways
all the days of our lives
Mindful of our freedom
the consequences of our choices
the razor’s edge of free will
the choice of life or death
cradled in our hands of clay

Sin gives Death
If Christ had not come
if the law alone was here
no coming of grace
The gift of the cross
the submission of the lamb
the saving of man
the gift of God alone
Our sin gives death
estrangement from God
the wages of our lives
Unable to follow the law
to conform our steps to God,
needing the grace of Christ
to come before your throne
to have eternal life

Alive to My King
Amazing to me
his grace, his gift
arms open to me
ready to hold me
to lead me to glory
through the gate of Christ
Alive to my king
no longer carrying my sin
left on the altar of the cross
redeemed and restored
brought back to God
back from the dead
alive in the Lord

Dead to God
If I were judged by my life
my days in the book of days
I would be dead to God
wallowing in the stench
the stain of my sin
damned to the pit
the fiery furnace
Only your grace
offered freely, given
washing me clean
by the blood of Christ
able, surely, with confidence
to come before my maker
made worthy by the lamb

No Life in Your Eyes
Seeing you there
knowing you were dead
no life in your eyes
lost, in time and space
cold that night
a hollowness in my heart
knowing you were gone
never to return
knowing you were dead
no life in your eyes
lost, in time and space
cold that night
a hollowness in my heart

That Night
I remember well
that night, now twenty years gone
the hollow echo on the line
after I answered him
that I knew you
that I was your son
That pause before he asked me
to meet him, there
at the hospital
I remember well
that night, the ice
thick on my car, the street
the tentative drive
bearing me to you
in that too-bright room
that cold table
where you lay
seeing you there,
knowing you were gone

Only Grace is Free
The things that do not last
those treasures of this world
worthless, costing so much
Only Grace is free

Pulling Up Lily Pads
So rich the stew
the memory coming back to me
the paddle blade
cut into the water
pulling up lily pads
just beyond the causeway
under the cool of the arch
into the lee of the lake
the still, quiet space
Long tendrils in the murky depth
the eggs of the bullfrogs
the algae layered
the smell of muck coming to the surface
pulled up out of the soup
on that day in August
February 11, 2011 and February 12, 2011
started at the House of Purpose coffeehouse
while listening to James L. Hofford reading a story poem

pulling up lily pads
just beyond the causeway
under the cool of the arch
into the lee of the lake
the still, quiet space
Long tendrils in the murky depth
the eggs of the bullfrogs
the algae layered
the smell of muck coming to the surface
pulled up out of the soup
on that day in August

Into Your Kingdom – v2
Not merely present
walking by your side
you opened a door for me
a foretaste of the sublime
Into your kingdom, your warm embrace
confident in the love of God
calm when I submit to him

Leaving the Stage
After years, decades
lifetimes in control
sudden, in the blink of an eye
lives changed forever

Leaving the stage

for a voice, protesting

A New Life - 2
The door opened
by the victory of Christ
the rising of the sacrifice
giving me a new life
Knocking on the door
that I would let him in
in opening the heartstrings
Christ entered in
Changing me utterly
cleansing my heart
offering me tomorrow
today again a start
To share the loving message
to add my humble voice
being the light to the nations
while remaining the salt of the earth

Into Your Grace
When you opened the door
when I opened the door
walking into your embrace
feeling safe in your arms
falling into your grace
Love washed over me
when I opened your word
falling into the living waters
changed from my history
knowing I was being restored
Wanting ever to be guided
calm within my storms
led to share your message
your love, your presence
to and for the whole world
So much bubbling up
a wellspring of words
wanting to submit to you ever
sharing this urgent message
so others may feel your love

Through the Threshold
My heart open
Christ coming through the threshold
He opened the door for me
to enter into salvation
Joined with my Savior
walking by his side
serving that others may know
the joy I feel inside
Hope for every human heart
love beyond comprehension
walking with hope in my heart
for my neighbor, my sister, my brother
The whole world in him
the hope of all mankind
joy in the way of the cross
life through the gate of Christ

Help in Our Prayers
So far away
the land of the Nile
yet we can offer hope
help in our prayers
for this nation
this people
That they would feel your presence
your goodness watching over them
in this time of trial and struggle
your love washing over them
in their todays and tomorrows
The world awakened
from too long slumber
thinking about the support they give
to despots and tyrants
For this we thank you
changing the course of history
maybe in this hope for all of us
in your protest victory
for more than just one land
All of us connected
the world ever smaller
turning to our faith, our belief
love for our fellow man

Unrest in Egypt – v2
There is trouble in that ancient land
so important to the world
unrest in Egypt
people taking to the street
it is time to speak
All of us complacent
if we do not join with them
calling for his ouster
for him to leave from power
for this to come to an end
