Tomorrow Could Be

Tonight could be
tomorrow could be
any day in our lives
some day long from now
God alone knows the time

The end of the age
the coming from above
Christ riding on the clouds
like a thief in the night
our savior will come
we must be ready always

The Only Gifts Worthy

The only gifts worthy
in response to his sacrifice
to give our hearts fully
to our savior, the Christ

Nothing held back
offering all to God
we are his children
and he is our Lord

Meager Gifts

Sacrifices from our wealth
too often that is all
what we can afford
out of our abundance

Meager gifts only
much more should be given
our whole lives over
to the purpose of God

May I give wholly
all of myself to God
submitting my treasure, my life
ever over to God

Ready for His Coming

Awake for the bridegroom
the master returning
ready for his coming
for shepherd us in

Christ will come
when we least expect it
like a thief in the night
at an unknown hour

Ever must we be ready
our lamps always lit
faithful to his calling
so we won’t be left behind

Through the Seeds of Our Witness

God’s holy purpose
worked out in our lives
if we submit to his calling
the command of the Christ

Making disciples
through the seeds of our witness
planting for God
a harvest in his time alone

We are to be faithful
answering his calling
to sow the seeds of Christ

“This is a very powerful message and one that needs repeating. We as Christian deny Christ when we do not live out the Great Commission by creating barriers, stumbling blocks to Christ. We must be sowing joy, not judgment, love not division, hope not condemnation, agape love not the values of the world. Only in this are we fulfilling our call, using our gifts for God's glory.”

Sharing Christ

As his disciples
picking up his sandals
our feet carrying his message
to the whole world

Going as he commanded
at his ascension
to go into the world
to save in his name

Baptizing our neighbors
as they are made his children
the sheep of his flock
together with us

Making disciples
through the seeds of our witness
planting for God

Sharing Ourselves

In going out
into the world
slipping on his sandals
onto his fee
going out
with Christ in our hearts
his Spirit leading
where we are to go

Sharing ourselves
what we believe in
committing ourselves

sent as he was

From Within the Flock

Serving our savior
each of us individually
given unique gifts
to lift the body up
to spread his message
Christ’s message of love

We are members
each of us together
sheep of his flock
part of the body of Christ
each of us called
to serve our master
from within the flock
we go out into the world

To be his messengers
his witnesses here below
telling the world
of his love for us
offering Christ
as each of us are able
being his hands and feet
on the earth here below

Seeking Him

Only in seeking him
in yearning for relationship
in calling to God
do we hear his voice for us
only in longing
to walk beside him
able then only
to carry on his work
to go as we are called
to make disciples in his name

Lone Sheep

Like the prodigal
like the sheep that was lost
embers dying
apart from the fire
metal becoming dull
away from the sharpening
the connections of love
checking our straying
there when we need help
guidance and healing
support along the way

We are to be sheep
disciples of Jesus
yet somehow we are to be
brothers and sisters
all of us children
of our loving God
needing one another
our of love serving
going out into the world
to do our master’s work

To Offer them Christ

To make disciples
as we have been called
we must offer them Christ
his love to go around
to reach our neighbors
that they would claim his name
to follow his path
only if we project Christ
in the way we walk on earth
only when they see Christ
in all we say and do

To Make Disciples

Not to make members
Christ’s commission before ascending
returning to God
his last pronouncement
offering us hope
in his returning
calling us to go
to make disciples

Sowing his love
to all mankind
remembering his sacrifice
the way in which he died
none of us worthy
all needing his grace
loving our neighbor
in this is our faith

Shunning My Neighbor

In what I say, what I do
how I live my life
I pray I bring them to the cross
to the healing of Christ

Shunning my neighbor
pushing them away
I pray this is never true
as I walk through each day

What must others see
when they hear words of hate
judging our neighbors
setting them apart

Christ’s commission
his message to us
to love our neighbors
and show them God’s love

Not for us to judge
to offer Christ instead
restoring us to God
if we go where he led

Walking as a servant
picking up our cross
so little to do
compared to what he paid

Forgiving us
why hanging on the cross
praying for us
that God would not turn away

The one sacrifice
while we are yet in sin
sharing this message of home
that all may enter in

Hate isn’t Christian

Division, dissension
derision, revulsion
judging our neighbors
while we yet sin

Hate isn’t Christian
no part of his life
nothing Christ did
should lead us to this

He taught us love
all of his days
from descending from heaven
to going to the grave

Dying for my sin
hanging on the tree
offering forgiveness
for we know not what we do

Eternity sacrificed
there on the cross
that we may live forever
because he paid the cost

I am Not Worthy

The world complicated
choices aplenty
easy to stand in judgment
to call another unworthy

Looking in the mirror
the way I walk in the world
needing his grace alone
to come before your throne

I am not worthy
to judge my neighbor
I am to offer
my love as Christ commands

If He who was holy
can go to the cross
can ask God for forgiveness
while he died for us

I am a vessel only

my comment posted to this post:
“This is a very powerful message and one that needs repeating. We as Christian deny Christ when we do not live out the Great Commission by creating barriers, stumbling blocks to Christ. We must be sowing joy, not judgment, love not division, hope not condemnation, agape love not the values of the world. Only in this are we fulfilling our call, using our gifts for God's glory.”

“ Jesus’ parable of the Sower focuses on the scattering of the seed.
No matter what kind of ground it falls upon, whether hardpan or
deep rich soil, God will have a harvest yielding a hundred fold.
So, scattering the seed aimlessly is not wasteful in God’s economy.”

Eternity dying on the cross
the infinite sacrifice of Christ
grace beyond our comprehension
his love pouring out

A Living Hope

Hope, not merely faith,
in the unseen
knowing Christ rose from the dead
that he will come again

A place prepared
blessings untold
treasures waiting in heaven
a site to behold

At the end of our days
a hope to be restored
walking with our savior

Let Go of the Temporal

Our sight must be focused
on that which is unseen
let go of the temporal
the things of this earth

Center on the promise of Jesus
the love of our eternal God
stepping out in faith
by grace life is assured

Less care for the little things
looking farther down our path
work to do in our time
a future in paradise

humble before God
offering ourselves in sacrifice
living in thanks giving

in the presence of God
thankful all of our days
praising our Lord

Even in a Whisper

God calling to us
even in a whisper
maybe intentionally so
that we would truly listen

The world around
even our own busy minds
causing clutter, distraction,
but God cuts through
that we would hear his message
calling to us
if we would but listen.

Something of the Spirit

Each of us gifted
by the same Spirit
a kernel of the eternal
breathed into us
something of Christ
of his Spirit
dwelling within us
giving us work to be done

Giving me voice
to rail against injustice
a mind moving
from our argument to another
hearing the details
but making a discrete whole
boiled down, to the essence
like refined silver
reflecting wisdom
shared that justice
would come to the fore

Don’t Worry

The main point
the lesson of Christ:
“Don’t worry,
God will provide.”

Such a hard lesson
central to our struggle
to let go of our day to day
and to follow Jesus

The world tells us
to be self-sufficient
relying on our wit
our toils
we are all that we need

Christ tells us something different
that we should not worry
turning our cares over
to the provision of God

Only then are we able
to truly serve our master
going where we are called
to do the savior’s work

Our task, our calling
to testify to Christ
to the wonderful fulfillment
redemption by the shedding
the offering of his blood,
of his perfect body

Our task, our calling

We are the created

we are of clay

Only one God
the creator of all
we are his servants

Because of Me

Sent by Jesus
out into the world
to be his messenger
his servant
to go where he calls

Through of me
the seeds are scattered
by my words,
by my actions
how I live in life

But if I am unfaithful
fail to follow his commands
judge my neighbor harshly
rejecting love and service
wanting my possessions instead

What have I accomplished
in the name of Christ
what seeds have I planted
on the dusty road

Where will they flourish
survive and grow
if I do not reflect Jesus
everywhere I go

The Fabric of Our Savior

Imitators of Jesus
sheep of his flock
followers of the master
doing his work

That we would put on
the fabric of our savior
that we would follow his footsteps
wherever they may lead

Oh to travel
the dusty roads with Jesus
to act as he acted
for those who were in need

That we would act justly
humbly before our God
that we would submit utterly
becoming the lamb

We must reflect Jesus
in all we say and do
if we are to draw others
to the way that is true

Sermon - "It's Nice to Share", by Pastor Ruth L. Foss, August 1, 2010, Suncook United Methodist Church, Suncook, NH

Pastor Ruth Foss
Suncook United Methodist Church
Sunday August 1, 2010
Luke 12:13-21 ESV Translation
Colossians 3:1-4 NIV Translation

It’s Nice To Share…

The Lord be with you…
And also wit you…
Let us pray…

Loving God, we thank you for your ancient word that is as relevant today as it was yesterday and will be tomorrow. We pray to hear your word for us through these ancient words and through your Spirit within us. We pray for your Spirit to be amongst us this day, teaching, guiding and sending us forth in your name. Speak Lord…your children are listening…

I love watching children at play. To hear their laughter and joy just takes my breath away sometimes. They seem to have that total abandonment about them at times…there are tomes that I am actually a little jealous about it. If only I could still have that total abandonment myself…if only I could truly set aside the world, even if only for a moment and enjoy that same abandonment that I had as a child. But this is one of the lessons I am learning from my children…to take time to be a kid.

But there are other times when I watch and I see something completely different…the times when, for instance, they may get a new toy or be playing with one of their favorites…or even have tat “precious snack” that they wanted. Oh boy…now that is a sight to see. I know you have all seen it…those times when there is no way they are sharing what they have. It is something that they have worked for or were given as a gift and it is not for the sharing…

This weekend we have had a visitor…Suncara spent the weekend with our family. The girls were so excited…they had a baby brother for the weekend. They were playing quite nicely this weekend and then it happened…Suncara, being only two, had one of Shanequa’s favorite toys…her “Barbie Computer”. Well…Suncara did the ultimately worst thing in Shanequa’s eyes…he said it was “his toy”.
Well…Shanequa very nicely explained to him that it was not his toy but hers and she was sharing it with him…it was her toy and he couldn’t claim it as his own! Ray even told me that the statement that she had made prior was even more to the point. She told him the “Actually…it’s mine and I’m letting you borrow it.”

Now to me…this is a learned behavior, we don’t come into the world saying “mine…mine…mine”, we don’t know the difference. Everything is something that is to be shared…everyone gets a chance to enjoy it and it doesn’t belong to me it belongs to “we”. The love we should receive from our parent isn’t something that they should hold back…it is not something that we should feel belongs only to us…it is something that we should share with our child…no holding back. So how do we learn about the “me” and set aside the “we”? Well one way is through society. Society tells us that we need stuff and the more stuff that “belongs to us” the more important we are…the more we matter. If you don’t have stuff...you’re a nobody, you haven’t succeeded in life. And when you get your stuff you need to keep it to yourself…everyone wants our stuff and if we share our stuff…well…then we won’t have enough stuff for ourselves and then we won’t matter or won’t be seen as having achieved something in life. We can’t take it with us but we are sure going to try!

Jesus had something to say about this “hording of our blessings”. He told a parable about this very thing. The parable is found in Luke chapter 12 verses 13-21. It reads (and I’m reading from the ESV translation):

The Parable of the Rich Fool

Someone in the crowd said to him, "Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me." But he said to him, "Man, who made me a judge or arbitrator over you?" And he said to them, "Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions." And he told them a parable, saying, "The land of a rich man produced plentifully, and he thought to himself, 'What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?' And he said, 'I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.' But God said to him, 'Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?' So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God."

Jesus was telling them…don’t worry about what you have…you have plenty…share what you have with those who are less fortunate…by doing so, others can be blessed…others can share in the “wealth”. It doesn’t matter what you have it is who you are that makes a difference and what you do with what you have. You really can’t take it with you so you might as well share it with others…they’ll only get it when you are gone anyway so why not cut out the “middle man.” By sharing…you will be doubly blessed to see how you have enriched others life instead of just your own.

We as Christian need to get this right. There are those out there who are searching to fill the void in their lives, the void that only Christ can fill, and if they see us with this mine, mine, mine, attitude they may just think to themselves “Well they aren’t any different than others around me so why would I want to join their group…why would I want to be like them, they are no different than those in the world around me.” I can only imagine how many people have been “turned off” by the way they have seen Christians act. As we go through a time of “Re-thinking Church” we also need to take the time to look at our attitudes and life and maybe re-think them too. Who knows what could happen?

Church…when the first church began so many centuries ago they shared everything. They sold all their possessions and shared what they had with everyone…no one was left out…no one had more than another. It was all used to further the Good News. We are baptized into a new life…a life with Christ as the head…we have died to self and raise in Christ…our vision should be above not in the world in which we live. Our treasure is in heaven not in the temporal things around. Maybe we need to get back to the basics of our faith…maybe we need to get back to the way it used to be…maybe our attitudes need to be re-grounded in what it was in the beginning. Maybe we need to remember the moral’s that we believed in…rekindle the passion for the Good News…reset our vision to what to use to be. You see…it shouldn’t be “the needs of the one outweigh the needs of the many” but “the needs of the many truly outweigh the needs of the one!” The Good News of the “One” outweighs the news of “the many” that are in this world in which we live. The many that are looking to fill their void with the “One” true soothing Balm of Gilead…the lover of their soul, our Risen Lord, Jesus Christ. Do we want to be the ones to send them running from or running to the saving Grace found at the foot of Calvary’s Cross? Will we use our blessings for our own self-worth or to enable others to have a self-worth of their own…enabling them to find their self-worth in our Lord Jesus Christ? Which will you choose?

AMEN

Sermon - "Buyer Beware", by Pastor Ruth L. Foss, July 25, 2010, Suncook United Methodist Church, Suncook, NH

Pastor Ruth Foss
Suncook United Methodist Church
Sunday July 25, 2010
Colossians 2:6-19 The Message Bible
Luke 11:9-13 New Living Translation

Buyer Beware

A reading the letter from Paul to the Colossians…chapter 2 verses 6-19 from the Message translation: (read passage)

The Lord be with you
And also with you
Let us pray…

Loving God, we thank you for this day. We thank you that we may come into your house and worship you. We ask for your Spirit to be with us this day…to feel your presence with us. We long to hear your still small voice speaking to us…guiding us as we walk this journey of faith. May we hear the word you have for us this day. Speak Lord…your children are listening.

Have you ever bought anything only to find that it wasn’t what you expected at all? Something that someone told you “you have to have this…it is awesome!”…only to find that it really doesn’t work for you…you actually hate it. I mean don’t get me wrong. . . I have bought some real awesome stuff that someone has suggested but what I’m talking about that stuff that you say to yourself “ why, oh why, did I buy this?”

I remember when those “Space Bags” came out. I thought to myself that this would be something awesome. I could store all those cloths in it when they were out of season. . . switch them out. . . boy I was going to have a lot of space now. Well. . . they really haven’t worked for me. I have the worst problem with them. They never stay deflated for me. Well at least I have a place to store my stuff. . .even if it really doesn’t give me extra space. Or how about things that say they are just like the original but it cost less so you can save money only to find out that it is nothing like the original and that it actually cost you more than if you had gone out a gotten the original. My gosh. . .there are so many things out there that are not what they seem. Things that don’t really work as they say it will. . . Things that kind of give that “false advertisement” way of presenting themselves. . . Things that are not truly the original but make a very poor attempt of being it.

Over the past couple of weeks we have been talking about how Christians need to “Re-Think Church”. . .about how church is not a building but it is the people in it. . .about how we need to think of church as a “verb” instead of a noun. . .about how at our baptism, we begin our journey of faith and become part of a church where we learn by the example of others how to become part of that verb. But there are so many “different churches” how are we to begin to decipher which one is right for us. . .how are we to know if the church we are part of is really following the ways of Christ so that we can be His hands, feet and voice in the world?

This world gives us a variety of ways and places to worship. Unfortunately . . .there are some people in the world who have decided on their own what parts of the bible work for them and which parts don’t. . .and choose to ignore the parts that just don’t work for them. These parts of the bible only applied to the “Olden Days”. . .they are just too “Old Fashion” for us today. God didn’t really mean. . .what He really meant was. . . With all these choices, how are we to know what is The Way and what is not really the way? Well. . . the scripture for the letter to the Colossians that we read this morning gives us insight on what to look for as we try to make choices for our journey that we call life.

Even back in the time that the letter was written to the Colossians, there was a problem with trying to choose the right way to go. (Can you see how history repeats itself in this) There were many religious leaders that were teaching “A New Way of Doing Things”, a way that was better than the old way, a way that was excluding some of the people while exalting others, a way that really didn’t put into account Jesus’ ministry and what He came to say and do. Why is it that we, as the human race, think we need to improve on things that have stood the test of time as it is? Why do we think that newer is better?

You may be thinking to yourself, about right now, “Pastor Ruth. . .if they had the same problem as we have now back then and history repeats itself, how are we to discern what it is we are supposed to be doing. . . how can we know?”, well. . .I’m glad you are thinking that. . .it shows you care. One way that we are able to figure it all out is by the grace of God. You see God’s grace not only shines down upon us but it also enlightens us. It is through prayer. . .conversations with God. . . that we can receive what we need. All we have to do is ask for insight, wisdom, and discernment. Remember the scripture from Luke this morning:

And so I tell you, keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened.

God will bless us with all that we ask for. . .if it is His will. . .if we but ask. This also holds true as we seek to find ways to “Re-Think Church”. . .as we discern ways to reach out to those around us with the Gospel of Grace.

Church. . .society will have us believe that anything that we do. . .as long as it makes us feel good. ..is a good and true thing; but. . .in the scripture that we heard this morning it tells us something different. We need to see things through the eyes of God in order to discern what is good, what is right, and what is truly from God. All we have to do is ask for His view and guidance. If it isn’t in the Word. . .if it isn’t the whole Word of God and just parts of it that will make us feel good. . . then maybe. . .just maybe. . . it is something that is an imitation that really isn’t as good as the “real thing”. The Word of God may make us squirm at times but just think about the alternative. As Robert Frost says in his book “Our heavenly Father”, “What God does not protect us from, He will perfect us through.” It is in our squirming that we become more like Christ. . .enabling us to be His feet. . .His hands. . .and His voice in the wilderness.

We have a choice to make church…we can accept just the part…the imitation…or we can accept the whole…the original…in its wholeness and goodness…which will you choose…which will you choose?

Amen.
