After the moment on Pentecost
when the flames alighted on them
the living fire of the helper
staying within each of us
Able to go as Christ had gone
sent as he was sent
teaching others about the love of God
disciples upon the way
Called to be the servants of God
to use our gifts in this life
to go over the gunnels of the boats
walking on water instead
Walking yoked to our Lord
the fire still burning within
messengers of his love
to the ends of the earth

Living Flames
Living flames of the Savior
the Holy Spirit burning within
the light of God within us still
guiding our steps on this earth
Witnesses to God
his role in our lives
leading us to serve
as more master did before
Out into the world
telling others of God’s love
offering a helping hand
a voice when oppression looms
Bringing Christ
to the ends of the earth
messengers each one of us
sharing his message of love

Sentient Fire
The whole house shaking
a mighty wind from heaven
descending, coming to the earth
giving them power
a sentient fire from God
Sending them, as messengers of Christ
emboldened to continue his work
bringing his message of love
his sacrifice and his rising
to the ends of the earth

The Spirit descending
not as a dove
sentient flames of the Spirit
alighting on each one of us
Coming to rest upon on
entering into our lives
indwelling within us

away from the sins of the earth
walking with us to heaven

Tongues of Living Flames
The Spirit on Pentecost
coming in tongues of living flames
each one of them being empowered
touched by the fire of his love
Make his witnesses
to all of the world
speaking in tongues they did not know
reaching each one whom they would meeting
sharing a message of God’s love

Running to Hear Their Witness
The pilgrims running
coming to where they were
amazed to hear their witness
in the languages they understood
Words of the savior
of the power of his message
coming to save the whole world
bringing us God’s love
The disciples speaking
in words they didn’t comprehend
but reaching all the pilgrims
fellow sheep of his flock
The flames of Pentecost
burning still within
each of us sharing his message
offering the world his love

Heard from a Distance
Heard from a distance
the moment of Pentecost
the fire descended
upon the gathered disciples;
but not a babble
speaking each in other tongues
those they had never known
reaching all, the pilgrims of the world
all who had come to Jerusalem
Sheep alone, they had been,
followers of the king
empowered to witness
to his amazing love
so all may hear him
calling to each one of us

His Life His Answer
Asked by John’s disciples
the one preparing the way
if he was the one foretold of
the king come to save
His life was his answer
that they should observe and report
witnesses of his power
his love for us on earth
Doing what God would command
caring for the least and the lost
healing the needy with his love
living a servant’s life

When They Heard His Answer
Wondering what they must have felt
when they heard his answer
not really responding as they had thought
when they asked if he was the one
Yet truly, in the way he answered
speaking volumes, fulfilling
all that God had promised
living as the Messiah
the one whom had been foretold
The way prepared,
the king come to earth
though born in lowly station
come to free the whole world
Born to be a sacrifice
a servant to God’s will
changing the course of history
in the way he walked on the earth
and his rising in victory

New life forming
transforming us from within
the flames of Pentecost descending
the quickening of life in him

Let me be but skin - edited
Let me be emptied, poured out,
my will, my all, given over to you
Fill me Lord, your life, your Spirit
your will acted out
Let me be the gloves,
your hands working through me
touching the world, reaching out
into the darkness, bringing your strength,
your life, through my skin,
merely your gloves
my will, my all, given over to you
Fill me Lord, your life, your Spirit
your will acted out
Let me be the gloves,
your hands working through me
touching the world, reaching out
into the darkness, bringing your strength,
your life, through my skin,

“I have a glove here in my hand.
The glove cannot do anything by itself, but when my hand is in it, it
can do many things. True, it is not the
glove, but my hand in the glove that acts.
We are gloves. It is the Holy
Spirit in us who is the hand, who does the job.
We have to make room for the hand so that every finger is filled.”

By Their Witness
The one who was to come
living on earth with us
not by his words
but by his life
his loving,
for the children,
the lost sheep
the lambs crying out
his ministry here
bringing God’s love
healing us all
with his blood,
his life, his sacrifice;
and by his rising
to glory, to paradise

Under Your Tabernacle
Finding you God
not in one place alone
within the frame of the church
Under your tabernacle
the tent of your meeting
the canopy of the dome
the arc of the sky
Under the heavens
in the world below
finding you here
walking with me
all the days of my life
guided by the Spirit within
being a messenger of your love.

Hiding in the Edge of the Wood
Not the shy deer
at the edge of the field
the silent old stone wall
from an earlier time
hiding in the edge of the wood
crumbling to the ground
The leaves of countless autumns
the lichen and the moss
obscuring the once clean edges
the form of the stone wall
when it marked important boundaries
when it kept people and animals out.

Staring at the Cross - 2
Silently praying
quieting my spirit
called to you
staring at the cross
Guided to you
from the way of the world
falling to my knees
asking my trembling prayers
calling out to you.

Shaping the Stones
That moment, together
with the flames falling
gathered together
creating, through the Spirit
a foundation, a beginning
the stones of the church
one upon another
together we with them
brick on brick
one stone to another
together the church
that we serve, living
within each of us

On the Day of Pentecost – 2
Flames of heaven
landing upon them all
upon all of us
imparting God’s love
the Spirit coming
as Christ had promised
falling upon us
As the dove had descended
landing upon him
sending us forth
as he had been sent
out into the world
sharing God’s love
for all of humanity.

Until the Voices Faded
Wrapped in worship
holy voices raised
singing in the night
call each of us
in the quiet of our hearts
to you, oh God
In the arms of your grace
feeling your Spirit
a physical, living presence
dancing with us
sharing songs of praise
until the voices faded

Their Clay on Pentecost
Hidden in the house apart
not venturing far from home
the disciples waiting expectantly
just as the master said
Timid, though they knew the word
the reason that he had come
not yet preaching the word
waiting for the Helper to come
Their clay on Pentecost
fired in the kiln of those flames
hardened, these men with feet of clay
to walk as disciples of Christ
Out into the world
baptized from above
the Spirit moving with them
out into the world
sowing the seeds of his love

“I have a glove here in my hand. The glove cannot do anything by itself, but when my hand is in it, it can do many things. True, it is not the glove, but my hand in the glove that acts. We are gloves. It is the Holy Spirit in us who is the hand, who does the job. We have to make room for the hand so that every finger is filled.”

not venturing far from home
the disciples waiting expectantly
just as the master said
Timid, though they knew the word
the reason that he had come
not yet preaching the word
waiting for the Helper to come
Their clay on Pentecost
fired in the kiln of those flames
hardened, these men with feet of clay
to walk as disciples of Christ
Out into the world
baptized from above
the Spirit moving with them
out into the world
sowing the seeds of his love

Imparting Guiding Confidence
In the telling of the story
that first day of Pentecost
the disciples huddled, still scared
believing but somewhat lost
Still not disciples
merely followers of the way
staying close to home
not straying far away
Imparting guiding confidence
their lives utterly transformed
now able to go out into the world
by his Spirit they were reborn

My Clay Changed
In the coming of the Spirit
the flames as on Pentecost
the stuff of me different
my clay changed, to be used
Made a vessel
holding the Spirit’s love
burning brightly within me
that I may do my savior’s work
Spreading the message of Christ
changing the world as he can
going to the ends of the earth
doing all we can

Filled with the Flames of Pentecost – v2
Filled with the flames of Pentecost
fired with God’s love
steeled by the fire burning within
to carry on my master’s work
His message of love
changing the whole world
turning definitions upside down
our priorities and our goals
Loving God, and all mankind
turning the other cheeks
walking gently upon the earth
helping others in need
Going boldly, out into the world
washed with the blood of the lamb
strengthened by the fire within

Fired with the Flames of Pentecost
Fired with the flames of Pentecost
God’s Spirit burning within
guiding us out into the world
the shared his message of love
To the ends of the earth
until all have heard
Christ bringing us back to God
if we will accept this word
Freed from the condemnation
eternal death no more
brought back to his loving arms
by the grace of God

quote attributed to Corrie ten Bloom,
“I have a
glove here in my hand. The glove cannot
do anything by itself, but when my hand is in it, it can do many things. True, it is not the glove, but my hand in the
glove that acts. We are gloves. It is the Holy Spirit in us who is the hand,
who does the job. We have to make room
for the hand so that every finger is filled.”

The Red of His Blood
The red of his blood
the flames of Pentecost
creating a church with his love
fired with the flames from above
The breath of God giving us life
the Spirit of God breathing within
giving us power to serve
Going as his messengers, his disciples
following our shepherd, the lamb
going out into the world
to spread his message of love
Like the first disciples timid
until the Spirit burns within
steeled by the yoke of Christ
guiding us into the world

Living as on Pentecost
Oh that I could claim
every day of my life
living as if it was Easter
living as on Pentecost
the fire burning within
The Spirit of God descending
the Father and the Son
Guided by the Spirit
until my work is done
Boldly speaking
wearing the cross on my chest
speaking of God’s love
offering myself as well
Going as Christ was sent
continuing his work
telling the whole world of his love
how he dying for us
That we too would be saved
choosing to follow the lamb
our own cross to carry
until we see him again

Living Pentecost
Our lives burning
fired from within
the flames of Pentecost living
within each one of us
Our lives a living Pentecost
carrying on our master’s work
going as he was sent
until the whole world has heard
The grace of our creator
the sacrifice of the lamb
the gentle guiding
of the Spirit living in man
All of us worthy
made clean by his sacrifice
able to come before the Lord
when our work here is done

Fingers of the Spirit
The fingers of the Spirit
the flames of Pentecost
falling on the believers
entering each of their hearts
Guiding our steps too
if we listen to God
the words burning within
to do our master’s work
The fingers of the Spirit
each of us in our turn
going where we are led
spreading the holy good news

Not so much the morning of Easter
believing in the risen Christ
searching for Pentecost

before the flames of Pentecost
Gathering in the single place
all the disciples waiting
together as the Lord had told them
following his command
before the flames of Pentecost
the Spirit descending
a wind from heaven falling
a sound to fill the whole house
What must they have been thinking
unable to hear
the power of God come down
bringing the Spirit near

before the flames of Pentecost
the Spirit descending
a wind from heaven falling
a sound to fill the whole house
What must they have been thinking
unable to hear
the power of God come down
bringing the Spirit near

breathing praises
All of the whole world
singing together
living in worship
all of our days
Breathing praises
to the Lord
all we say and do
unto our king
Guided by the savior
his example in life
led by the Spirit
to a life of grace

Swallowed
The enemies of the people
those who would enslave them
swallowed utterly
like a stone into mighty waters
buried under the sea
Ripples only,
the rest of them forgotten
Moving on, following God
guiding us, ever,
leading to the promised land
