Crayola Morn - v2

Crayola Morn – v2

Smell the bold colors,
Their scent rich in my nostrils,
Illuminated on the branches before me as I drive.
Low sunlight piercing the dawn behind me
Pulling me west on a Crayola morn’

McIntosh red and day lily yellow
Blood crimson and pumpkin orange
Cinder simmering on the stove
A stick of cinnamon crunched underfoot
A fragrance unfurled

Fall hues on God’s pallet
Memory of construction paper leaves,
Cut with blunt-dull scissors,
Mashed potato paste we used
To make our masterpieces
For the kitchen refrigerator

Malleable colors from the big box
Sharpener in the side, thick with shards, shavings
Clear evidence of familiarity, of use;
Peeling the label back, concentrating
To get the fine point
To stay within the lines

Crisp air, pale blue brightening,
Hard shadows falling, fading;
Cirrus on the horizon, bright sun in my rearview
Dead leaves on the yellow line;
Taste of vivid color on the wind
Stark in their fleeting purity

Pumpkin Seeds – v2

Under the canopy
over the lake
on the flat surface
of the pier, under the awning
next to the boat moored there

I lay still on the pier
watching the water below me
fish, pumpkin seeds,
darted fitfully beneath me
aware of my presence

A fishing leader only
dangling off my index finger
a hook hidden from their view;
A less-than-cautious one was
caught with canned corn on my line

Dropped in the bucket beside me
flopping and flipping
while I did it again
in the clear lake
in Mound, Minnesota
forty-four summers ago

“How could I not post this poem with this photo ... it did an odd thing, Mr Foss saw tiny fish in the water like pumpkin seeds and, because of it, I see the seeds in the pumpkin like little fish within the reeds.... the power of suggestion!

Pumpkin

the giant gourd ripening
in the field, the garden
above the rich earth
under the frost this morning

gathered into my arms
filling my human basket
brought within the warmth
of the house, its inner chambers.

Pumpkin trees, Cranberry trees, Canary trees

At the far end of the manicured lawn, the field really,
rolling up toward the horizon line,
up above the fringe by the stonewall
the road I travel on
a ridgeline, a frame to the green, the grass
pines and still-unchanged oaks to be sure;
but pumpkin trees, cranberry trees, canary trees
all radiant in the bright fall light,
shimmering, their moment of glory to reveal
Pause as I pass, linger on the road
take in the wonder of the brilliant color
waiting to be seen

The Bounty of Your Garden

Your garden, ripe with squash, with beans,
soon to bear tomatoes, pumpkins
other summer fruits ready for picking
the bounty of your garden
gathered by loving hands
brought into worship, Sunday
this sacred place, sanctuary
To be shared, with those in need
a ministry, hospitality, serving our neighbors
So we are called, providing them
a glimpse of Christ,
by the work of their hands

Time for the Fair

The cold in the air
reminds me of the country fair
the candied apple,
the hot burnt sausage sub
the smell of wet hay,
the warm touch of a cow’s side
the shriek of the roosters,
the squeal of the pigs,
Men with canes urging the oxen
to drag the sled farther
weight added as the stakes rise
kids running from ride to ride,
teens sneaking off
the races after twilight
the craft booths,
the giant pumpkin, squash,
the pies and paintings,
with sash and ribbon
pride of the makers
for all to see

September Corn

Slimmer pickings at the farm stand
smaller, more immature
lighter kernels on the cob
late corn, from the gleanings
before the stalks are harvested
for decorations of the houses
productive still; but not much longer
snap of fall in the air
on the breeze,
haggling over the price
in reverse.
A half dozen ears, please.
“no, have two more,
I’ve been having trouble
selling the smaller ones.”
Cider and chrysanthemums
soon to join the selections,
with gourds and pumpkins
later sales before the closing
for the season

Scent Memories

The new candle tarts,
ready for the winter season
shared by the shopper yesterday,
the fruits of her labor, presented one by one
so many scent memories flowed from my memory
of the fir forest, the balsam wood,
the nutmeg and cinnamon from her kitchen
from the hot cider, the pumpkin pie,
the winter potpourri
Smell rekindling, connecting earlier times
in my life with right now
How sweet is memory that is conjured
with the smell of pine, of harvest, of home

Pumpkin Massacre

He had a knife!
a willing accomplice
and three accessories before the fact

They didn't stand a chance,
their four young victims
that crisp day in October

The knife blade bit into
the firm ripe skin
Forming ghouls and ghosts
Glowing orange.
from within their hollow shells.

The Pumpkin is Calling

The coachman’s at the door
Checking his watch
He knows the score,
The sequence, the deadline

Down the road
Heeding the call,
the end of the magic
Door closing too soon
As night, PM
Crosses to ‘Morn

Sitter watching TV
and the clock
Meter running
Another hour, a few more dollars
Before the gong
When the coach
Reverts to reality
